Advantages: Looks nice, protects Palm

Disadvantages: Flawed design, makes Palm bigger

Having "lost" my Palm III by dropping it and it landing screen first on the corner of some furniture, I was determined to protect my new investment in a Palm Vx.

Though the standard issue leater-and-card cover is lightweight and doesn't discernably make the thing any more bulky, it does have the problem that if the Palm is switched on, a reasonably light pressure on the front is enough to cause the underside of the cover to touch the screen and unpredictably "operate" the device. Given that I'm a lazybones who has the machine switch itself off after a minute of inactivity rather than have me do it, this wakness in the standard case was instantly irritating because the thing was forever beeping and whatever in my pocket.

So the hard case is was then, from the now defunct urbanfetch. It is a bit of a love and hate thing really: I like the silvery looks of the hard case, and I like the ease with which you can attach it to the device. It is a good strength given its weight, and only marginally adds to the size of the Palm. It has a cut away to allow use of infrared, and generally does not impede the use of the thing whilst out and about (though it does make one handed use a bit trickier - like juggling a book and the phone at the same time.

However on a dialy basis I look at my Palm and say "why, oh why, oh why?". There is no cut away at the bottom to allow you to properly sit the Palm in its cradle with the hard case attached. Given that the stongest functionality of the thing is as an extension of your PC (at least it is for me) then it is likely that you will want to sync it up pretty frequently. I have found a way, involving balancing the cradle on Post-its and so forth, of making it work - but this is definitely not as per the manufacturers recommendations.

Given that design has been so important in the development of PDAs this difficulty of making the thing actually work - a triumph of form
over function - is unforgivable.

However, I need the protection, so stick with it I have. I've had if for a year now and it has done the job. But I hope they re-design the thing soon!

Excellent op davey. I have just bought a m505 and want to get a hard case for it but you have put me off a bit. The extra protection does appeal to me though after I an accident that killed my psion 5 series three years ago.
