**Overview** Well as christmas draws ever closer, I thought it would be a good idea to do a review on pantomime (Oh no it wouldn't!) I love pantomime, it's surprisingly brilliant as I will try to explain....later :) **What is Pantomime (or Panto)** It is a christmas play, no it's the christmas play, set for the family; slapstick for the children and err a great deal of smutty innuendo's. Pantomimes used to be somewhat a tradition of christmas, along with eating mince pies, and carol singing, going to watch a pantomime during the christmas period used to be hugely popular amongst adults and children, but these days it's very hard to find one close to me. Every year my Nan used to book tickets for the whole family, and we used to have a whale of a time. But i have to admit it's been about 5 years since i last saw one. The word Pantomime, originates from Greece way back in the 17th century, where the word meant a whole different meaning as to what it is today- a solo performer imitating a act, singing solo and playing musical instruments. ...Go through the looking glass that is. Who? Alice of course! Let me start at the beginning. I ponder the question 'when does a musical play, aimed at entertaining and amusing children and adults, become a pantomime?' Perhaps it is all about tradition, the usual run-of-the-mill Mother Goose, or Jack and The Beanstalk etc.? I hope not, because I have found a delightful musical play, showing at the New End Theatre, in Hampstead, which seems to have all the fun of a pantomime and yet breathes a breath of fresh air into the concept of family theatre.
