Rusedski always seemed to be chasing the match and was clinging on my the skin of his teeth. In fact it was only in the fifth set that he managed to step up a gear and play more like he should have been playing for the entire match. After watching this match, off and on through the usual, predictable rain delay, I felt depressed and let down that after five sets of, sometimes appalling tennis on Rusedski’s part, Greg Rusedski managed to lose this crucial match. To be honest, Rusedski looked like winning the match in the first three sets and even in the fourth and fifth, with the small glimmers of hope viewed by the public, he never really seemed to display the form of a championship winner and it is almost unbelievable to think that three years ago, Rusedski was playing the best tennis of hi life to reach the US Open final. Spadea straight out of a 21 game losing sequence. Rusedski, owner of the worlds fastest serve, a grass court specialist and seeded. Out on court 1, one of the major show courts. David versus Goliath? Christians versus Lions? The home crowd were aware that 'our Greg' needed a good match to boost his confidence. The opening game was a disaster. Five double faults ensured that not even Spadea could lose. That set the tone for the contest. This was not for the tennis purists, althought it did have its moments.
