Advantages: No need for an appointment
Disadvantages: False price list in the window. Bad attitudes.Bad haircuts.
Ever since I had my own hair cut at Supercuts last January, I have tried to resist writing this review for Supercuts, but no, I am going to have to do it ... I have (foolishly) taken my children to get their hair cut at the same branch of Supercuts today, and I can resist no longer.
Supercuts is a nationwide chain of hairdressing salons throughout the UK, and they seem mainly to be based in shopping centres from what I have seen.
Their main selling point seems to be that you do not have to make an appointment, so there is the convenience of just walking in and waiting for a time slot, which can lull you into thinking Supercuts is a good idea. It is also supposed to be very cheap, although I don't think so.
Personally, I do not enjoy going to the hairdresser. I know a lot of women see it as a bit of a treat, but I feel quite the opposite, so I am admitting being a bit biased. But still ....
The branch I am referring to here is Nottingham Victoria Centre Supercuts.
Okay, so first, my experience: I last had my hair cut here last January. I usually use an out-of-town salon near where I live, which is cheap, staffed with nice people and always gives me a good result. So like a fool, when out shopping one day, I decided to get a trim on the spur of the moment and walked into Supercuts.
The prices are displayed in a big board in the window, allegedly £16.95 for an adult haircut. More of that later.
I was served quite quickly, and asked for a dry trim (although they could wet it with a spray to help accuracy). No, I was roughly told, this is not possible, I must have it wet/washed. (No other hairdresser has ever had a problem with the concept of a dry trim!).
I asked if the price would be the same and was told it would, so I agreed.
I was then given the haircut. My hair is thick, and requires parts of it clipping up out of the way while it is tackled in sections, which would be obvious to anyone competent and qualified. This was not done, it was just hacked about and roughly cut at the ends.
I clearly stated how much I wanted off (no more than one inch trim to tidy it up) and at least double that was taken off.
Basically, the haircut I received was rubbish. Then came the bill: Something around £25.00 if I remember correctly. I was told this was because of the hairwashing. I could not cope with arguing (I know i should have, but you know how it is!).
I decided that this was a one off episode, surely, or the chain and the branch wouldn't still be there, would they? Give the benefit of the doubt etc etc. So this week I went in there with my children, as they fancied a change - They also normally go to the same place as me, and have a light trim plus thinning scissors as their hair is also thick and having it thinned makes it easier to brush.
Again, the board displayed the price: Child's haircut, £9.95.
I explained to the hairdresser what we would like doing - No, apparently I couldn't have the thinning scissors because it ruins the hair. Would she like layers, they asked me, and we all agreed. The manner of everyone working there was really offhand, and looking over my shoulder while talking to me, etc etc.
This time, the haircuts were okay, mainly because you could hardly see where they had been: I could have done it myself.
Guess what, I got to the till and the price was .... £12.95 each. How is that £9.95 each then? I am no maths genius, but come on!
Clearly this is not just a one-off then. I am actually going to complain to the Head Office now. I want to give it 'no stars' but the system won' t let me, that's why Supercuts has got as much as one star.
Summary: AVOID AVOID AVOID

- 22/08/09 I went to a different branch this morning and was shocked to be charged £23.95 to have my hair washed and cut very quickly, while the hairdresser paid more attention to her friends than me! And they didn't try my hair, I have never before had a cut and blow dry without the blow dry!!! If I'd known it was going to cost that much I would have gone to a proper hairdresser, paid a little bit more and left feeling like I'd got what I paid for! Never again!!!!! |

- 27/07/09 I have before said i'd never go to them again, but I won't now ever. Everything that's been said here is true, the price in the window isn't what you get charged, they don't listen, and there's times i've got home and only then realised that something is wrong with the cut-something uneven, too much took off, looks odd etc.Last time I got my hair cut by some stuck up little madam that just seemed to want me out the salon a.s.ap. I used to go for convienince, not anymore... |

- 09/04/09 I stopped using them years ago because of their inability to display an honest price. |
