Advantages: Juniors have prority at this club
Disadvantages: Wasted grant, courts are getting more expensive
The Sutton Junior Tennis Centre prides itself on being a club exclusively for Juniors, and it is supposed to be one of the best tennis centres in the country. However, recently it has deteriorated. It received a £2 million grant from the LTA to build some new indoor courts, and to build the first public clay courts in the UK. In my opinion they have completely wasted the money- the indoor courts are always vacant- probably because they charge £13 n hour which is completely out of a lot of people's range. Secondly, the clay courts are actually astroturf, and are therefore no use to the Rover kids who were supposed to be getting some much needed practice for the European Clay Court season. They are charged at £5 an hour, so again not many people play on them. SJTC is not accountable to anyone for the money spent, and therefore it has been pretty much wasted. The structure is so poor, as shown by the club being submerged under 2 feet of water last week, and the roof of one of the new offices caving in- hardly something that should happen for a 6 month old building. I still play there because there is nowhere else to play, but I think they are going away from the Junior tennis orientated running of the club to a profit related scheme. Is not that the way of everything these days?
