Advantages: Good fun, Lets people express themselves

Disadvantages: Some people don't like joining in

I have just noticed this category called Theme Party and I thought I'd share a few of the theme parties that we have had over the years together with the funny stories that go with them.

The first one that springs to mind is the one that my sister and her boyfriend of the day threw with a theme of America. I had decent legs in those days and went as a cheerleader, but the funny story that I remember happened to a couple of my sister's friends.

The couple in question weren't absolutely certain which house my sister lived in and as it was in a street of terraced houses they all looked very similar. They knew whereabouts in the street the house was so they though that they would be able to spot something when they got there that would show which was the right house.

When they arrived the door was open and a man was standing in the doorway wearing a baseball shirt with a number on it, as this was obviously American they just walked in - much to the amazement of my sister's next-door neighbours! That's right the man in the baseball shirt wasn?t actually anything to do with the party!

There they stood in the middle of a room full of strangers dressed as the Statue of Liberty and an American Sailor (a la South Pacific). We didn't let them forget that one. By the way the neighbours thought it was hilarious!

The next one that comes to mind is one that I threw at my current house and I set the theme as 'Come as a song title'. Well I had one friend who came as about 30 song titles - he was wearing 'Red Shoes' on the bottom of which he had written the word diamonds so he had 'Diamonds on the Soles of his Shoes' and so the list went on.

The one that really stands out is Dave, my partner, who was then just a friend. He came dressed normally and went upstairs to get changed returning wearing his coat. When he opened it he revealed a strategically placed box of 'Flash', wit
h something underneath to cover his modesty of course! It is still talked about to this day as you might imagine!

We also threw a party with the theme 'What you were wearing when the ship went down'. This was an excellent theme as it allowed everyone to be as flamboyant or as reserved as they wanted to. One lady came in a ball gown with long gloves and her hair done in a sophisticated style and she said that she was in the ballroom.

One man came in the outfit of a Roman galley slave and had done the research so that he could even name his ship.

I must admit for that one I dressed normally and said that I had been on my way to the bar for a drink - a fact that anyone who knows me would readily believe.

In conclusion I would say that with theme parties I always try and get a them that people can really get into if they want to but that they can join in modestly if they would rather not be the centre of attention. That way all the guests are happy.

Boring farts who don't want to join in aren't worth having at the party anyway! Good op.

The song title theme sounds good.

Some great ideas there! I have always fancied a Dr. Who themed party, but I'm no good at doing costumes really.
