Advantages: No needles on your carpet

Disadvantages: none

The whole business of a Christmas tree is slightly absurd. Huge numbers of trees are cut down and sold at daft prices, and people cart home this dead plant which will continue to look worse and worse the longer it sits in your house.

Think of the hoovering, the needles stuck in the soft of your soles only moments after you set up the thing. And even if you try your hardest, and buy the Christmas issues of all the home style magazines, you can't kid yourself that a tree covered in baubles and tinsel and little chocolates is in any way tasteful.

It's gaudy. It's tacky. It's daft. (kind of like Christmas as a whole). So why not flaunt the tackiness? Get yourself the biggest fake tree you can fit in your house, and cover it from top to bottom with colour and glitter and revel in the fact that you're not harming the environment, you're not setting yourself up for housework, and you have a grand monolith of gaudiness to liven up your home. Hurray!
