Walkers Fish & Chip Flavour Crisps
Advantages: Great aroma, great taste, a flavour triumph
Disadvantages: Left me wanting actual fish and chips
Having seen the advertisements on television about the six new walkers crisps flavours the general public is being asked to vote on for the new permanent flavour, my girlfriend and I decided to give them all a try as we both enjoy crisps.
Having now tried them all, I have decided to review them. I will use this header for each of the reviews and the same main info but I will look at each flavour individually.
As ever with Walkers crisps, the packaging mentions that they use home grown potatoes as they produce a better crisp. Also as ever, the crisps themselves are of a high standard, well cut, decent sized on the whole and well cooked, better than the often greasy/oily own brand cheaper crisps.
They are, as with most branded crisps, packaged in foil packs to keep the crisps fresher for longer (quite why they bother I don't know as lets face it most people buy crisps to eat them not to stash them away in the cupboard
for special occasions...
Any way, in conclusion they are good quality crisps, now on to the flavours, this review is of the Fish and Chips flavour.
This was the last flavour we tried, so by now we knew that the first thing to do was open the pack and take a big breath to gather in the aroma. Upon taking a deep breath of these crisps, I felt transported to a chippy, not the bog standard low quality affair you find in every village and town, but a good quality one right on the coast, where they get their fish straight from the fishermen, where they take great pride in freshly preparing their fish, where they hand cut their chips from good quality potatoes, where the oil for the frying is changed regularly so it never gets those horrible black bits in it, nor does it pick up the flavour from all the different things that have been fried in it. You won't find batter sausages or spam fritters here, this is a classy fish and chip shop. The smell was amazing, the slightly fishy, slightly greasy, potatoey scent with a hint of vinegar really was quite something, and instantly made me want to eat some fish and chips, I hoped the crisps would not disappoint.
The first tasting was positive, they really had that taste of fish and chips, it was quite something. There was definitely a fishy taste but not one that was overly powerful nor unpleasant. At the same time there was the potato flavour of the crisps, and a hint of vinegar splashed over the chips. There was also that very slightly greasy flavour you get from battered fish. It was quite an amazing flavour. As I made my way through the pack, the flavour remained really good. It was vaguely reminiscent of the Scampi and lemon flavour Nik-Naks and a hint of some cheap tomato sauce flavoured crisps I used to sometimes have as a child.
Having tried all the different flavours, my girlfriend and I both agreed that these stood out as the most distinct flavour of the six, they had the lovely aroma and the flavour that maintained itself throughout the pack, unlike the Chilli and Chocolate ones which lost any sense of chocolate very quickly. The flavour is more robust than some of the others and I think they work as a concept much more than some.
The only disappointment I had with these crisps was the fact that my brain was saying "hmmm yummy Fish and Chips" while the textures in my mouth were saying "crisps" so I didn't get that lovely satifaction from eating something which smells so nice, my stomach and brain were execpting and hoping to be filled with crispy batter, tender fish and stodgy chips but instead they got a small helping of crisps. This said, I think it means the crisps were a triumph, they intended to be Fish and Chips flavoured and they fooled my brain and stomach into thinking that was what I was going to get so they certainly succeeded.
In my opinion, these are the best of the bunch of new flavours and will be the ones getting my vote, they arfe robust, different and tasty.
I'm giving them four out of five because I can't give four and a half as I would like, with half a star being lost for making me want fish and chips but only getting crisps.
Summary: A flavour triumph and in my book, the best of the bunch.
