Advantages: Alan Hansen is an England fan, We won, Becks is God

Disadvantages: Lucky, Poor side, Zero tactics Sven

So here we all are with a beer in one hand and the wife nagging in the other cause your enjoying yourself with out her. England versus Greece and a place in World Cup 2002 in Japan and Korea.
A packed Old Trafford whiter than a retreating Italian army rises at 3pm to what we hope is a formality. A brave little girl leads out the players on an oxygen mask. Not Darren Anderton after a double take.
The sun gives it a summer feel with security helicopters giving it a World Cup finals feel.

The Greeks or Hellas to all you Paninni sticker collectors over the years open briskly moving the ball around with confidence and vigor. They aren’t just here for the shopping, although the nightlife might interest them more as going Greek in some areas of the London of the North is all the rage.
England have been playing better away from the wide open spaces of Wembley and the old management’s brains.
But today they look poor and lost without Owen as they clearly miss him on the end of Beck’s awesome over the top passes.

The team has been picked from the top four teams in England by Sven.Or have the best players in England moved to the top four clubs. Whichever Ericson’s selections are based on he really needs a playmaker who can run at defenders. Be it from one of those clubs or not.
Then the inevitable happened as the Greeks were rewarded with an excellent goal from their young talented striker. The only player whose name doesn’t end in S slotted the ball across the goal for Aristis to hit across the reaching Martyn.
Martyns opposite between the Greeks sticks is having a stunning game and probably playing for a premiership career that may come to a lot of these young kids.

That score was quickly flashed up in Germany to inspire the equally nervous Germans. And with Belarus behind to Wales it could be a play-off against the trigger-happy Ukraninas.Imagin trying to get Dennis Bergkamp on the fl
ight.
Will England go down like Olympic airlines will next week or will second half sub Andy Cole rise to the Old Trafford crowd. Errr sorry guys in Athens airport but your all fired. 67,000 managers have their differing opinions on England though.

Half time….Germany 0 Finland 0
England 0 Greece 1
Wales 1 Belarus o
Poland 1 Ukraine 0

England have failed to score before the 43rd minute in any World Cup qualifier this campaign. So expect more action in the second half.

Three minutes in the second half were unreal as Martyn saved a England with his feet. Teddy Sheringham scored the fastest goal by a substitute in history twenty-three seconds later with a back header of the Sanchez Wimbledon style.
The aging stalwart was on for just under ten seconds to make history. But the Greeks were playing out of their frying pans and incredibly took the lead a minute or so later. Karocadis swept in what looked like the winner from yet another Neville blunder.
Meanwhile in Gelsinkerken that sounds too much like a concentration camp the Germans were hitting the bar more than George Best.

England were poor though and it was left to the greatest player England have had for along time to save the day. He had been priming his sights from those free kicks all the match until the final seconds. The net bulged and it was Sianara Kiev and the Ukraine play off.
The crowd rose like a white blanket in a summer breeze. Inflating puffed cheeks whooshed on the bench as Erricson rose and screamed with the rest of them. Germany nil nil flashed up and the party began.

This game was up there with England Argentina for tension and drama with Beckham this time the hero amongst few. The manager was wrong in his tactics and the likes of Cole and Heskey looked like they should have been playing for Bristol Rovers that mirrored the opposition’s shirts. r>Something very special happened here to lift the nations gloom after the terrible post New York slaughter.
At one point Ericsson had to promise to return The Elgin Marbles in return for a few dodgy free kicks, and boy did we get one when we needed it.

England spluttered and fell over the line after the sings of that against Holand and Albania.
If you know a fin then but him a beer tonight.

As the young Greek boys’ head of to Soho with Graham Le Saux and Fredrick Lundberg, English fans can relax and look forward to being late for work next year with all those 9am kick off in the land of the rising sun.
There was only one rising son in that match and it was David Beckham.

Like the article - not generally a Beckham fan but you captured his value to England at present. Add Owen and then find 9 truly world class players and we will take some beating.

Sorry for the lower raitng but this category is for opinions on the World Cup 2002 and you've only concentrated on one game - it may be better placed in a review of the England Team.

I've never seen Beckham as over-rated, more like caught up in the most extreme tides of public feeling. He's a gifted genius today, or so they say, but it won't be long before they all hate him again.

I missed our first goal when my husband (who doesn't understand the importance of these things : )) had the cheek to switch channels at the crucial moment. What a finish, though! It's a wonder my husband wasn't finished too...

; )
