Advantages: lovely,fresh home-grown onions

Disadvantages: drying them of can be a pain

Anyone who has a vegetable plot but doesn't want a lot of work should try growing onions.
If you buy onion sets, which are available from Woolies or garden centres etc., plant them as instructed between late Feb to early April, by the end of summer you'll have lovely fresh onions which you can store and use all through the winter. The onion sets look like tiny onion, about pickled onion size, and about two or three weeks after planting will start to sprout with a green shoot at the top. As time goes on the onions will start to swell and the sprouting t the top will grow until in late August the green tops will fall over thus indicating that the onions are ready to harvest. Pull them up,let the tops dry of and then crumble this away and any flakey skins and store them in a net in a cool dry place. Once planted, they need nothing done to them except to hoe the weeds from between the rows. Also don't worry about snow or frost damaged the young shoots or young onions because they survive.
