Advantages: Practical, broad subject area, reasonable price

Disadvantages: Limited time, limited theory

Wanting to learn a little about gardening having bought my firsthouse I enrolled on the certifcate course at Writtle college. The programme aims to cover a variety of practical issues from growing vegetables through to landscape gardening.

The programme lasts a year and takes one whole day every week, this provides sufficient time to cover a broad range of subjects and provide an excellent introduction.

I have found the programme to be an EXCELLENT introduction for the complete novice and it has opened up a whole new interest area for me. I feel the course is reasonably priced but it is worth notig that you are required to provide your own safety equipment such as protective shoes and overalls.

There is no additional work to be done outside of the college, and the fact that it is practical ensures a good understanding of what you are being taught compared to a classroom session. Time is focused upon doing therefore the theoretical side is possibly a little light. For the office based worker this time spent outside is fantastic - highly recommended.

Welcome to Dooyoo, and particularly welcome to the gardening section! And well done on a good first op. I'm glad you found a course with emphasis on the practical side. I feel that many horticultural courses on offer are too much theory and "Chelsea Flower Show" orientated. Gardening is about getting your hands dirty!
