Advantages: clean pond and happy, healthy fish

Disadvantages: None

This year I have discovered Technical Aquatic Products and two of their range in particular have made a big difference to my pond.
The first of these is the Anti Algae Pad. This is a chemical impregnated pad which you place either in your pond filter, under a stone in the pond, or even floating on the pond surface. By calcualting your pond volume, you cut the pad to the correct size. One pad will treat approx 5000 litres and, provided you use the correct size, is harmless to fish and plants. Pads should be replaced every three months (or monthly if there is a severe algae problem) so what seems like a large initial outlay (£6.95) is actually very good value. The pads work in several ways. They reduce and control the pH levels in the water which reduces algae growth. They trap and break down nutrients from the pond water and also break down suspended algae. They are impregnated with algicide and also act as a mechanic filter to trap algae. My pond has gone from deep green to gin clear and has remained that way all summer. The other product is Medipad which is used in the same way for
two week periods. It treats a wide range of fish problems including bacteria, fungi and parasites and can also be used in Spring and Autumn as a preventative measure. I have found that it successfully dealt with an outbreak of whitespot in my pond and my fish have never looked healthier - well worth the £3.95 purchase price.
These products seem to be available from most garden centres. In addition TAP also runs a customer helpline for aquatic problems - although, as calls are charged at £1 a minute I haven't taken advantage of this particular service.

It's about a month since I chucked a bag of barley straw into my pond so I'm starting to hope to see signs of improvement in the green murk. If not I'll definitely try this!

Thanks for the info. Sounds like these products will help prevent some of the major pool problems. Rose
