Advantages: clean, effective
Disadvantages: none
A coal fire is a simple pleasure. We've had one in every house we've owned and I hope we always will. But it can be a real pain on a cold winter's morning if it doesn't want to light. OK if you have plenty of paper and kindlers but we're not always that organised. Enter the humble firelighter, saviour of the unprepared - and when you pop out to get some, my advice is to bypass the convenience store and head on down to Tesco! Forget the usual brands and look for "Tesco 18 Easy Light Firelighters". First thing you'll notice after opening the packet is that it's not the usual white block which breaks into "fingers" but dinky little briquettes, individually wrapped in silver plastic. Great - no more paraffin smell on your hands. But - they look so small, are they going to work? Light 'em up and... whoooosh! Well, not quite, but certainly more heat than any other firelighter, and they do make a whoosh sound! Ten minutes later and the fire will be fully alight. And I bet they're just as good for barbecues. So - Tesco have taken a simple commodity and turned it into a great product. Highly recommended!

- 14/04/03 hey, i get impatient when my puppy forgets her toilet training, a coal fire would kill me! |

- 14/04/03 I used to live in a house that had ONLY coal fires - no other form of heating - so to be honest I don't think I could ever face seeing a firelighter again. :-). Wish my firelighters went 'whoosh' so quickly then!
Excellent review.
