Advantages: Keep your feet dry.
Disadvantages: Not built for comfort without socks.
The most under rated bit of clothing must be the Wellington boot, You buy them on price, decide they are not comfy, and put up with them. When protection is required against the wet, we just accept the first pair of wellies we find. The problem with most welliingtons, is that they do not fit.
These Wellington boots are made to keep out the water, but not the cold. The boots are however, resistant to oils, petrol, and most chemicals.
If you choose correctly, Wellington boots can be comfortable, warm, keep you dry, and last for a long time. The important thing is to decide what size you need when wearing the correct socks, many people try these on with a thin pair of nylon socks, then complain they're too tight when trying to stuff their feet in wearing thick hob socks.
I used to have a pair that had ribs on the front, for shin protection, and the same on the sides where the little ankle bone sticks out
There are lots of insoles you can use nowadays, and I always advise using something, it adds to the comfort as well as the fit, plus it gives another layer of insulation where it matters.
Socks are very important too, there are many types on the market nowadays, from Merino woollen socks to Goretex, try and avoid Nylon, these are very poor at insulation.
Wellington boots have a fabric lining, which absorbs moisture and must be allowed to dry out, this is best done in the open air.
A lot of these have a commando sole which are very good in the grip department. Whatever sole they have, make sure they do have a good grip, as you will be using them in wet conditions.
One small niggle is that no company seems to do half sizes, this is a shame. Having said that, a lot of firms are now doing different width fittings.
As for the price, you can buy them for less than nine Pounds, or pay more if you want a designer name, just remember the cost is a lot higher if you want them posting, they are heavy.
Remember to store them away dry, or they will rot away.
Summary: A decent pair can be well worth it.
