Advantages: Bright

Disadvantages: No Call to Action

Quite frankly I don't think the Argos banner calls to action.

So they've got "8,000 products now online". Argos is already an established brandname and I would have assumed that they had an online presence -- Ok, so now we know.

What more do they want?

I suppose they would like us to visit the site. But this banner doesn't do it for me. We already know the brand but not the online address, that alone may encourage some people to click..... sorry Argos, not me.

The problem is surfers are immune to banner adds, even flashing ones with highlighted words..... unless they say "Free Home Delivery", or "Click Now for Argos Giveaways!"

I think Argos would be better off with a drop down select menu on their banners. The consumer could then choose what product they wanted. The select list itself is a call to action and highly effective banner campaign.

Although this usually means serving real media ads, I have my own banner on this theme that is just a screen shot of drop-down select lists and gets an 8-10% click-through rate; quite good for a non-professional campaign that doesn't cost me an arm and a leg..... and probably better than a costly professional one, that would.

If Argos want more click-throughs, perhaps they need to re-think the ad and do the right thing.... to get consumers to click through to their site.

Even as a brand-awareness campaign, Argos might do better with thier URL on the banner so that it stays in the mind of those who saw the banner but didn't act.

In all, Argos have told us that they are online but we're not really tempted to click to find out where, unless we're an Argos regular in the real world..... Or if we've got nothing better to do than write an opinion about the banner.

Having said that, Argos have chosen a great place to advertise..... when the on-line consumers start rushing through the d
ooyoo doors. By then, Argos will have gained from dooyoo members writing about their ad and should be using the feedback to try a few different ads for effectiveness.

== Updated ==

I've just noticed that the the alt tag for the banner says "go to argos.co.uk"..... that's probably more down to the folks at dooyoo than Argos, so my opinion of the banner hasn't changed. Maybe, as dooyoo members, we should click on the banners occasionaly to make the campaigns on dooyoo look attractive to the advertiser.

By the way, if you just type argos.co.uk you can't get into the site. Argos needs the full URL..... www.argos.co.uk -- Click The Banner instead..... and be prepared to wait..... longer than you would for your cardboard box to come along, on the conveyor belt.

I thought it made dooyoo run slow!

I'm afraid I've never seen this Argos banner ad!
All thanks to a nifty tool called AdSubtract - checkout my opinion on it, it's very useful (the util at least!) and'll stop you seeing another banner ad as long as you surf!

I don't really blame dooyoo for getting as much revenue as they can from banner ads, but generally these kind of ads are the lowest form of internet life and will surely die a death eventually
