Advantages: Cashback site with no annual fee. Guarantees to match other cashback sites rates
Disadvantages: No tracking statistics. Status doesn't change to confirmed.
Cashbackkings was launched in February 2008 and is owned and run by the company behind Rpoints which are one of the more established cashback sites. When the site launched it was based on the same format as Quidco - essentially offering online shoppers 100% of the advertising commission paid to the site on all their online purchases in return for a £5 deduction from your cashback earnings. It had a 'limited offer' whereby people could reclaim the initial £5 fee, if they were already a member of a rival cashback site. This tactic must have been very successful for the site in terms of encouraging people to switch their custom from Quidco, as Cashbackkings have recently abandoned the annual fee altogether. There are now no deductions whatsoever so every single penny of any cashback earned is yours to keep!
The site is a very easy one to navigate and is totally user-friendly, even to those who might not have been familiar with the concept of cashback sites. (Where have you been for the past few years?!) It even has a step-by-step guide to signing up and using the site:
1. Open an account.
This literally just involves entering your name, email address and setting your own password. Quick and painless!
2. Activate your account.
Cashbackkings send an email to your email address to confirm that it is valid. When I signed up, the email came through almost instantly. You just need to click on the link in the email and you can start using the account to earn cashback.
3. Find the sites you want to buy from.
The site has a search box if you want to find a particular retailer. There is also a menu listing all the different categories and sub-sections within them. (The list includes things like 'Insurance' 'Clothes & Fashion' and 'Health & Beauty'.) Most of the major online retailers are listed on Cashbackkings with the most notable exception being Amazon.
4. Click on the retailer's link
You will go through to the main website and do your online shopping as usual. Just before you click, you can see how much cashback you will earn. This is usually a percentage of your total spend or, occasionally, a fixed amount (usually for sign-ups and gambling promotions etc.)
5. Your account is automatically credited
All transactions should track withing 14 days. If nothing is showing after that time, you need to submit a 'missing cashback' query and CBK will look into it for you.
6. You get paid
CBK make it sound like a very quick process but most of us familiar with cashback sites know that it takes quite a while for the money to work its way through the system into your pocket!
That's how the whole process is supposed to work. This is my experience of the site to date:
Positives:
- No admin fee at all! Last year I had my admin fee refunded as I was already a member of Quidco and now Cashbackkings have removed the admin fee for everybody forever! The site is now completely free to use so nobody has anything to lose by signing up.
- No 'end of the month' pay runs
Payments can be requested on any day of any month (providing your cashback has reached the 'payable' stage.) You have to request the payments as they aren't issued automatically. If you request a payment by 9am on a Tuesday at the latest, you will receive money into your bank account on the Friday of that week!
- You can request a payment every week!
As above really - so long as you have at least £1 at the payable stage you can make a request every week.
- Choice of payment options
I have always claimed my payments via BACS (bank transfer) and every payment has been made on time without any problems. You also have the option of receiving payments by Paypal or as Amazon vouchers, if you prefer. I can't comment on the reliability or speed of those methods personally, but wouldn't imagine there would be any problems.
- Tracking is excellent and customer service is great even when things don't track!
I've been using Cashbackkings for the majority of my online shopping since joining in February and only two items have failed to track. I submitted claims for both and both were paid within a few months of submitting the claims. This compares very favourably with my experiences of both Quidco and Topcashback!
- Pays for you to refer your friends
You can earn £1 for everybody that signs up using your referral link. Better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick!
- Lots of free sign-up offers regularly updated
New sign-up promotions are introduced on a regular basis. Recent offers include 50p for signing up to a Bingo promotions email, £1 for a Home Insurance quote and £2 for submitting an IVA advice claim form. New offers are featured on the homepage and you can also choose to receive an email on a weekly basis giving details of some of the best new deals available.
-Member Forum
There is a friendly forum on the site where members can discuss cashback offers with each other and their experiences of using different retailers. CBK staff respond to queries and suggestions on the forum too and are very responsive and proactive about any issues raised on there.
- Best of all - the Highest Cashback Guarantee
I've deliberately left the best aspect of CBK to the last. CBK guarantees to pay you the best rate of cashback for every site that you use. If you do a transaction through CBK and find that another site was offering more cashback, on that date, CBK will match that rate. It's just a matter of submitting a simple enquiry form and sending a link to the site with the better offer.
I have only needed to make use of this highest cashback guarantee on two or three occasions as, generally speaking, CBK offer at least the same percentage as the other major 100% cashback sites. Each time, the additional cashback was credited on to my account without any quibbles. This guarantee gives you greater reassurance that you're not going to find a better deal from any other cashback site and, if you do, you're not going to miss out on the difference.
Negatives:
- No tracking statistics
My experiences with tracking have been good so far but there are no statistics on the site to guide you on how reliable a particular site is at tracking and paying out cashback. This is a real shame and an area where other sites have an advantage as these statistics just give you a little more reassurance.
- The status of cashback
Most cashback sites use a system to indicate which stage a transaction has reached. This gives you an idea of how well the cashback has progressed and, again, gives greater reassurance as you see the status change, for example, from 'tracked' to 'confirmed' and then 'awarded' or 'payable'.
CBK just indicates that the transaction has tracked and gives you an estimated payment date. If the cashback takes longer to receive than expected (which can happen quite frequently), the status changes to 'extended.' This seems to create unnecessary anxiety rather than the reassurance that other sites' 'confirmed' status offers.
- Cashback at Amazon not available
Amazon is one of the most popular online retailers but, unfortunately, is not listed on CBK currently.
That is honestly all of the potential drawbacks that I can think of -and I've been sitting here racking my brains trying to make the pros and cons seem a bit more balanced! Just on the basis of the Highest Cashback Guarantee and the fact that there is no admin fee for using this site, it really seems a no-brainer to me. You really have nothing to lose and everything to gain!
Edit May 2009: Cashbackkings have controversially removed all of the daily clicks from the site so I tend to use Topcashback more nowadays.
Summary: These are the kings of cashback!
