It's very different to dooyoo!

Advantages: easy to make money
Disadvantages: too much spamming
Being an avid review writer and regularly writing on dooyoo and ciao.co.uk as well as contributing to thebookbag.co.uk, I was interested when maximus-qualitus told me about ciao.com. I hadn't actually realised that there was a US equivalent of the UK site. I signed up in November when at the time the site was paying 1 US$ for every review published so it looked like it could be quite lucrative. Sadly the dollar payments did not last very long and there seemed to be a good deal of confusion about what you could actually earn and I have to admit that I'm probably confused still! I will talk about the payments later.
The good thing about ciao.com is that for us dooyoo writers we can just copy our reviews on to the site so it means that there is a way of making a bit more money for your efforts. The downside is that unfortunately they do not have all the categories we have on either dooyoo and ciao.co.uk and sadly for me there is no opportunity to post any book reviews. As most of the reviews I write are about books this is not very good for me at all. However, there is the opportunity to write about films, music, cosmetics and a whole host of electronics. I have to admit that I have been trawling through my past reviews in order to see which ones I can publish.
You recently were paid $0.25 for every review as well as a small payment per read and there are different levels for this. However the $0.25 has now been replaced by a share of the premium fund. You get paid through PayPal and can cash out with only $5 in your account. Obviously it will depend on the exchange rate as to how much you actually make but I have just received my first payment which was $11 which turned out to be about £7.80 so that wasn't too bad at all. Like the UK site you earn more money if you write the first review and also if you get others to join up as your affiliates.
To me it is just a way of making a little more money and I don't go in for the community side of it at all. It's interesting to see quite a few familiar names on the site though and it seems that quite a few dooyoo members are filtering across.
The one thing that I really notice is that the quality of the reviews are that much lower than we would expect over here. You might see a really dull review of about five or six lines of low level information that at least half a dozen people will have rated 'exceptional'.
It seems almost mandatory to leave a comment as well even if you have nothing to say. I find that I might get twenty or thirty comments all saying something typically bland like 'nice review' or 'thanks for sharing'! I have to confess that I have started to play that game myself because it does seem to be the way to get more people to rate you and I thought I would try it as an experiment!
You will also find that you will have the world and his wife queuing up to be your friend! At the moment I have about seventy requests for friends and probably half of these have not even read any of my reviews! Everybody seems to want to send you messages as well - normally telling you that they have rated half a dozen of your reviews and maybe you could kindly do the same! THis is a typical message you might receive upward of twenty times a day:
'Hi friends i have 3 new reviews please rate on it and give your precious comments on it and inform me so that i can do the same for you thanxxx.............'
'i have published so many reviews about food. please read and rate them. and let me know that u have done this. thank you.'
You get the picture?
There is so much spamming on the site that it does get to be very tedious. I just tend to ignore all my messages which is a shame as there could be a genuine message that I might want to respond to. There is also a lot of revenge rating too - a lot of people do not take kindly to a 'somewhat useful' rating even if that is what most of their reviews deserve!
I should redress the balance a bit and say that there are some very good writers on the site too who put a lot of effort into their reviews and do rate fairly. The problem is that they are so hard to find!
I hope I haven't put you off entirely because it is another way of making a bit of money online. As I said earlier I have just received my first payment and have just cashed in another £28. It's the sort of site I will probably dip in and out of but certainly it will not hold the same addictive lure as dooyoo.
I joined as an affilliate for maximus-qualitus so if anyone does want to join up and be referred then please send me a message.
Summary: A totally different experience!
