Advantages: Recycling and Clean and environment friendly
Disadvantages: Don't take care of listed buildings and take ages to do demoished and esate and rebuild
I have Lived in Greenwich for a Number for years and fell that the Council is among the best in London for Parks and open spaces, Recycling etc. Greenwich is the most open space borough with 32 parks and open spaces across the whole of Greenwich.
parks and Open spaces
In Greenwich there are over 30 parks. three of them are the last woodlands in London and they are called Oxleas woods, castle woods and Eltham park North. They also have a park called Sutcliffe park which is in Eltham and has won many awards for being turned from football fields to a large Nature Reserve with the river quaggy being open up. They Don't really take car of there parks as they are no park wardens looking after them. all the park wardens do is open and locked up the parks.
Recycling and waste collection.
the recycling in Greenwich is very good and is leading the way to try to reuse all recyclable marital. In Greenwich we have three bins
One is for Food which is collect weekly. The food is composted down.
one is for recycling which is collected weekly. The Items are sorted at the depot and are sent for recycling.
One is for other waste which is collected front nightly. This waste goes to landfills
Greenwich aims to have everyone recycling all there waste and have a target of 70% of everything recycled by the end of the year. Now Other councils are coping Greenwich Council which is a good way as Greenwich are leading the way for recycling and doing there best to protect the environment
Greenwich environment days
Six times a year Greenwich hold events which are mainly on the environment and they give out stuff like Low energy Light bulbs, Energy saving stuff, water saving Stuff as well as pens and pencils which are recycled from old vending machine cups and cd cases. They also give out Free Notepads, sticky notes which are from recycled paper as well as a large amount of stuff to show that things made from recycled martial can do the same job as things not made from recycled martial.
Disused buildings in Greenwich
There are a number of disused buildings in Greenwich many being listed and rotting away as the council don't know what to do. one example of a building rotting away is a Grade two Listed Cinema which is now in the Buildings at risk register. There is also a castle which is a grade two listed building on top of castle woods which is rotting away and is on the buildings at list register.
so in greenwich listed Buildings when they get disused are not cared for and are sold on to privite sellers which spend years getting planning permission. so if your in greenwich and see an disused building and it looks listed. don't expect to see it turn it its former golry.
Greenwich and the Ferrier
the ferrier is an esate which is due to be demoished and all rebuild. the Council have been moving people off for years and the work was ment to start in 2000. But this date has been set back and back and the Ferrier is still standing awaiting to be demoished. the ferrier was in Channel 4s progamme Demoiantion with Jannet Street porter.
Overall
Overall Greenwich is a great place to live and there services are Excellent. the only thing they need to improve on are finding a use for disused buildings mainly Listed Buildings, keep there pojects on time without delay and try to have park wardens in most of the parks which have high levels of problems.
Greenwich i have to say are doing there bit for the environment and with high recycling rates they are the best in london. They also try to help people by giving out free Energy saving bulbs which will cut CO2 a lot. If every home in greenwich had the free bulbs we save a lot of CO2.
Anyway
Summary: a great Council which needs some improvements
