I've lived in a dozen local authority areas in the UK. At present, I'm in the Scottish Borders, held here by family, financial circumstance, and medical disability. I can't say with any authority that the Scottish Borders Council is the worst in the UK - I can certainly say it's the worst I have ever come across. Ineffective, endlessly delaying, infinitely self-justifying and unashamedly self-righteous - like so many councils they have long forgotten the meaning of the phrase 'public servant'. Having read judithpow`s horrific experiences with Scottish Borders I can only say that, It is with sadness that councillors there, have fallen foul of business acumen and kowtowed to pressures to reduce community taxes, the knock on effect being of course the drastic reduction in services to the needy and disadvantaged, What a surprise then that I can support this rendition of mine, to this political ramification of what Councils can be to their community (As it is music,even to my cynical ear) I live in and work(for) Guildford Borough Council Surrey, We probably have one of the highest Community charges in the country, but the story is well formed for the ... Originally from East Lothian, I moved to the Borders 12 years ago. During that period I required assistance for housing as I left my violent husband and taking my 3 children with me. I was eventually allocated a homeless accomodation (after a month staying in over-crowded conditions, with friends and their family) and then a HA house after another month. There are few facilities for domestic violence within the area - in fact even the main police HQ is based at Hawick.
