Advantages: contact the local councillors
Disadvantages: send the right people to assess a situation
I have to say that the only time Thurrock Borough Council gets the job done,is when I complain to our local councillor and even then it can be like pulling teeth!
As we are pensioners and live on a walkway, or as we call it a rat-run with a block of garages in front and at the side of our home, this has always been a problem since the drug addicts, under age drinkers gather at the side of our home and roll spliffs on a regular basis much to our dismay.
These garages were built on a cement plinth that is at least 3ft high off the ground, and so these young kids could look into our house without any trouble at all!.
These garages now have a spiked fence around them and it's like we live in a prison or on a railway line but it appears to deter yobs somewhat!
I asked our local council if we could have a higher garden fence at the side because we just want a little privicy from the prying eyes.
Two men came around (white shirts, black trousers, and sunglasses looking like miniature versions of the Blues Brothers) and mentioned the fact that we had contacted the local councillor about the fence, they don't like the local councillors getting involved for starters!
They looked at the fence which has been there since the houses were built in 1973 and said that the fence was high enough because they couldn't look over the top and it could only be 6ft high anyway.
I explained that as they were short in stature just like I was,but I put it a little more bluntly than that to them,I told them about the kids who did the drugs, boooze and whatever else on the garages who could see in to our kitchen and through to the living room from the garages.
"Are the Police aware of this activity" they asked.
"Neighbourhood Watch Area" I responded so obviously yes.
Needless to say the Blues Brothers declined stating that the fence was at least 5ft 7in and measured this by their size .....no tape measure but just a guess because of their height, or lack of it I might add.
They left, so hubby got the tape measure out and the fence is only 5ft 5in which gives us 7 inches to play with so now we have planted large climbing roses with huge thorns that will reach at least 8 ft and hopefully our privicy will be restored for the first time in 35 years.
I have it on good authority that if you want something done just do it without asking permission..they know not what you do!
Summary: laughable

- 27/07/09 Sounds a nightmare! Have you thought about getting the media involved? Your local news station may take up your cause, especially as you are pensioners and the council are deliberately being awkward! |
