Advantages: pain went almost immediately, free on NHS
Disadvantages: none
I have always been quite septical about natural remedies such as acupuncture - having an in-bred fear of needles certainly doesn't help! Some years ago I fractured my spine in a car crash and have lived with back problems ever since. Last summer the pain was so bad that I had to go to the doctor for pain killers - something I normally try not to do. He prescribed me some very strong tablets and tried to persuade me to try the dreaded needles. Being a complete coward I immediately refused but decided that it was worth listening to what he had to say. When he told me that the needles would only stay in for about 7 seconds i thought that considering the pain I was already in, another 7 seconds would not make a great deal of difference if nothing improved. Two needles were inserted, one either side of my spine, for about 7 seconds. I would say that the pain was no worse than pricking your inger with a needle when sweing. Seconds later, the small of my back was glowing and warm and my ovement was much more free. I have since been back twice for more 'jabs' and am now completely converted. It still hasn't cured my fear of needles but acupuncture needles are so fine that I try mentally not to think of them as needles. A definite thumbs-up to being jabbed!
