Advantages: Painless

Disadvantages: may need many treatments before you see a result

If it's got a complimentary health tag on it-bet you pound to a penny I've tried it. Except for colonic irrigation! Pass! (pun intended!)
I actually started off with acupuncture about 20 odd years ago-because this one looked the most mystical(therefore had to be good!) and I wanted to see how it worked.
The acupuncturist had me laid on my side and I had needles th full length of my back, some on my midriff and two in the space between thumb and fore-finger. Nervousness soon gave way to fascination that I couldn't feel a thing. Honestly. Not the needle going in or it actually embedded in my flesh. I could move my hand around and it was completely pain-free.
After about 20 minutes the acupuncturist used moxibustion on me, which was putting a smouldering taper on the ends of the needles allowing heat to travel along its length.
It was very relaxing-but did it actually help I can't really say. I had about 6 sessions and possibly I might have seen huge changes if I had continued with the treatment but unfortunately finances dictated how many treatments I had.
I also had aa acupuncture stud put in my ear (told you I'd tried it!) to help lose weight. You were supposed to press it before eating a meal to suppress appetite. Again was it mind over a matter. The great Jan de Vries mentioned this just a few months ago on tv-just press (acupressure) the point just inside your ear to suppress appetite.
The idea behind acupuncture is that there are energy lines connecting all parts of the body and if these channels (meridians) become blocked then ill health will ensue. The needles are supposed to stimulate the channels to let the energy-the chi - to flow.
If you fancy it then do make sure you see an acupuncturist registered with the governing body-or you may end up being the first human pin cushion!
