lThe Alzheimer's society have been so helpful to me over the past two years I can't thank them enough. Firstly, I had to put mum into a care home as she couldn't cope at home any more, with vascular dementia. Mum had sold her house so she was not liable to any help with payments at all and so paid the ridiculous amount of £795 a week. The Alzheimer's society explained the criteria for funding to me and unfortunately mum had too much money saved. I can't complain about the home she was in as they treated her well. The accommodation was excellent and mum was very happy in there. However, after a series of serious falls and broken bones the residential home felt they couldn't cater for her needs any longer and we had to find a EMI nursing home. Because mum was in hospital following her 3rd fall and having a broken femur she became non weight bearing. At this point mum was assessed and once again she was turned down for financial support. This is when I contacted the Alzheimer's Society again and they basically informed me of what I could do. There advise was so helpful and the lady I spoke to guided me through the process of writing a letter of appeal and the appeal meeting itself. Her advise helped me look at different websites and gain as much information as I could about the assessment for fully funded health care. Armed with facts and information I wrote a letter going through all the criteria that they had assessed mum on. Result!!! Mum was fully funded for 6 weeks while they looked into my case. I then asked for help and advise again from the society as I had to attend a follow up meeting and again argue my case. I won - mum is now fully funded by the NHS.
If anyone finds themselves in a similar situation please contact them. They are so helpful and supportive.

Summary: They offer help, support and advise on all sorts of dementia.

Its an absolute disgrace that people who have scrimped and scraped and gone without to buy their own homes so they have something to leave their kids have to sell their homes to pay for nursing home care. Those who have not saved or just spent all their money get everything paid for by the state. There is a great disparity in what you pay for in England compared to Scotland which is so unjust.
