Advantages: Fun, Nice feeling, Looks funky

Disadvantages: Uncomfaortable for at least a week, A bit painful

After lots and lots of courage I eventually went and had my tongue pierced. It's been about 2 months later now and i'm really really pleased with it.

Before you all think about having it done i'd thought i'd write an opinion about everything to do with it, the process, the pain etc so you can make a valid decision and not regret it afterwards.

Firstly, make sure the place in which you are goin got have the piercing done has all the relative certificates, and if you can, check to see if any of your friends have had piercings done there previously so you know everything is fine. Before booking an appointment for for the piercing you should ask to talk to the person in charge, a free consultation when you can ask any questions and find out all those questions niggling at you.

I had my piercing done in Brecon which is about 15 miles from where I live so I made sure that I was happy with the set up because you really don't need to be worrying about anything else other than the normal nerves. If the person is professional he will talk you throuhg everything he is going to do and more than likely clean the implements before you to prove the point.

My tongue piercing cost £25, and then I paid an extra £5 to have it changed after the swelling had gone down so i think it was quite a reasonable price.

Before you sre pierced you will be asked if you'd like a metal or plastic bar put in straight away. I would reccommend the plastic option as the bar is so big for your tongue to have enough room to swell a metal bar can be more uncomfortable.

Firstly you will be asked to wash your mouth out with mouth wash to get rid of any germs and afterwards a special paper type tissue will be used to dry your tongue not for it to be too slippery so it can't be hold properly.

This is where all the fun begins! You point your tongue out and a gel will be put on it to make your tongue numb(I had chewing gu
m flavour which was quite nice!)and then the piercer will make a pen mark where he is going to make the hole.

Now the pain bit! Well, you stick your tongue out and he has a kind of pliers to make sure it doesn't move(lots of dribbling occurs I warn you!)and then he takes quite a large cocktail stick and just sticks it right through your tongue, followed by the actual bar which is 2cm long. I'll be honest and say it did hurt, but, I was expecting much worse believe you me.

Straight afterwards you need to swill your mouth out to get rid of all the blood (not too much though)and then you look at it in a mirror for 10 minutes amazed you've actually gone through with it!

I stupidly thought that because it had not swollen up straight away that I would be lucky and it wouldn't. How wrong could i be?
Everything was fine until around an hour later and then my tongue suddenly swelled up masses and it was a bit painful to speak. You should rest your tongue as much as possible but after you have it done your on such a high it's very hard to shut up!

Then, the worst day followed, I tried to eat and i couldn't move my tongue at all, not even a lolly because I couldn't even stick my tongue out. I ended up break the lolly into small pieces and then shovelling it into my mouth and leaving it there waiting for it to melt on its own.

If you are one of the unlucky ones like me I suggest you drink as much as possible and try to eat coldish soup.(I hate soup though so I just starved!, not really I ate masses of ice cream!)

After around a day I started to be able to eat some soft solid foods again although with lots of water and lots of time. Things got better from then on and only occasionally did my tongue really hurt where i discovered that aftershock got rid of this!

To decrease the swelling the best thing to use is crushed ice as much as possible, slowly sucking it. Crushed asprin is also g
ood to mix with it although i've got asthma so I couldn't add it.

It took around a week for my tongue to be completely painless and to be able to eat the majority of foods (toast was still quite hard!)although it's taken a month for my tongue tp go back to it'e proper size!

Normally you should go back to the piercer in 10 days to have it changed to a smaller proper bar but I waited two weeks and still it was swollen and so I had an 18mm bar, and 2 weeks later I change it to a 16mm bar.

You can either have steel or titanium bars but I would reccommend the latter because it's the lightest anf generally only about £2 more. They come in many colours and at the minute mines purple. Instead of buying new bars all the time for different looks you can buy things to screw on the top such as small jewells, spikes or dice etc. These noemally cost around £3 to £4 and so are much more value.

At the moment i'm still using mouth wash dentyl ph (it's supposed to be the best for piercings)in the morning and night although you could cut back to using it once a day. It makes sure no bacteria or germs can cause infection, and to add to this, you should gently clean the top and bottom stud with a toothbrush to get rid of any unwanted food.

Although I think my tongue looks funky there are other qualities about it that i wont go into much. To kiss it can be much nicer and is very different although the person who gets the best deal out of it is the person that you are giving the pleasure to.(Lucky bugger, and there I was suffering!)

I don't think i'll ever have anything else pierced although I can understand how some people get addicted to it now. I love my tongue piercing and i'd definately reccommend it.It was worth the discomfort!

If anyone wants to know anything else, just let me know!

Hi!

I have been thinking about getting mine done, I have a tattoo, a belly button piercing and lots of ear piercigs, but I am scared about this, there are lots of horror stories, like if they don't pierce it in the middle of the two muscles you can end up not being able to use one side of your tongue. What worries me slightly is the place I got the others done, they didn't use a clam for the belly button, and I had been told they would, the piercing is perfect, but I am not sure if they will do it carefully enough. And I am scared of the pain!

Can you reassure me?!

Definitely not for me, but an interesting and informative op.
