Advantages: As above
Disadvantages: As above
I decided to have a body piercing about 5 years ago. To this day I have no idea what compelled me to do it. I think I was going through an enforced period of change in my life and it was something I could do deliberately. I wanted to make a statement, to feel bold and confident and in command. OK........ what I actually wanted was a tattoo but I was too scared that I might regret it. I had one of my nipples pierced and whilst it was a very strange experience, it certainly didn't hurt. I had to be very careful with it for a few weeks after the piercing but it didn't really ever bother me that much. I never took it out and whilst I did not make a habit of showing it to people, or even telling them that I had it done, I did have the odd moment of slef-smugness in important meetings or boring conferences when I hugged my little secret to myself and reminded myself that I wasn't quite ready to be swallowed up by grey-suited suburbia. What I really like about body piercing is that it's not permanent, doesn't hurt or affect anyone other than yourself and can really give you a boost in terms of confidence, self image and even self esteem. Personally, I wouldn't have a really intimate body piercing but that's only a choice thing. I wouldn't advise anyone against it either.

- 07/09/00 Do you know, I didn't think about it at the time but I wonder whether it would make any difference to breast feeding if there has been a piercing and then the hole has healed. Anybody know? |
