The specialist told my sister and her husband they could operate on the kidney and heart but not the lungs; she would have to have a course of chemotherapy to kill the tumours before they could operate on the kidney and heart. Marianne spent four weeks in hospital having intensive chemotherapy, her parents were given a flat in the hospital grounds and we helped my Mother look after Marianne’s three older brothers. I have thought long and hard about whether I should write this opinion or not. I watch the add on television about children who are suffering from cancer telling us that the children go that extra mile and asking us if we can do the same by giving a donation to help research into cancer; a few year ago that add would have made me think and perhaps be full of good intentions but I did not really understand the enormity of what these children were going through.
