Advantages: smells great, staying power

Disadvantages: the price

Christain Dior, can rightly be blamed for creating the most monstrous of perfumes ever with their 1985 perfume "Poison". Any child of the 80's will probably recall that ever so cloying lingering perfume! It wasn't until fairly recently that I realised that my old die hard favourite - Dioressence was actually made by the same company.

Christain Dior was THE french haute colture house of the 50's.It was Dior in the late 40's that was seen to create the "New Look" a move away from the austre war years fashion to a more richer look.During the 1950's their head designer was Yves St Laurent. Given that this company has managed to keep a good grip on the "high class" fashion market ever since it's no wonder that they soon branched into the perfumerie side of things! Dior perfumes on the whole are a heavy perfume more suited to evening wear unless you're in your teens in the 80's then Poison was worn verbatime. Fortunately at the time my "posh" perfume of choice wasn't the rather nausea provoking Poison but the slightly more subtle Dioresscence. It was with the gift of this perfume that my love for posh smellies was awoken!

Doiressence was first marketed back in 1970, given the fact that Christain Dior is synonimous with high class fashion this perfume was marketd as a perfume for the sophisticated, confident woman with good taste and class. Certain perfumes have an associated feel good factor to them and Dioressence is certainly one of those perfumes. With it's slightly heavy smell which lingers it is definetly a prefume that makes you feel like your wearing something expensive. It's got a typical 80's smell to it even though it was first marketed back in 1970, when prefume was marketed to be unsubtle and in your face unlike some of the crisper lighter prefumes of the 90's!

With any "posh" perfume you're going to get a certain amount of opule
nt packaging, it's all part of that clever marketing ploy to make you feel special and want more! Dior has slightly failed with the packaging of this perfume. In all honesty it's slightly dated with a very 50's feel to the box and most definetly the bottle. The box it's self has the usual gold lettering that you'd expected along with a blue mosiac background. The bottle is definetly a trip in time to the 50's with it off white plastic cap with the CD embossed in an understated manner on the top of it. The bottle has small ridges on and the ultimate in 50's tackiness a sticky label with the name of the perfume on it! Having just done a search for prices for this perfume it would appear that Dior have updated the packaging and the bottle,I'm assuming this was done in the last couple of years.

Dior classes the perfume as an oriental type perfume, the top notes being aldehydes, greens and fruits. The heart notes being jasmine, geranium, cnnamon carnation, tuberose, ylang-ylang and orriss. Base notes being patchouli, oakmoss, vetiver, benzoin vanilla and musk. On first spraying this perfume is very much in your face, it smell strong with a knock em dead literally feel to it. But once the intial notes have dried it then gives a much more subtle smell with a sophisticated feel to it.It's slightly musky with a hint of vanilla and flowers to it, if you sniff for a bit longer you might just pick up a very slight patchouli smell -but I'd add this isn't a strong smell more a hint so dont be put off by that fact! This is a perfume that does not need to be constantly resprayed as it has great staying power, it lingers practically for a whole evening.

Searching for UK prices for Dioressence online, was rather difficult. It was readily available on must US perfume sites, but appeared to be unavailable on most of the well know UK sites that I've purchased perfume from in the past. I eventually found it on www.fascinat
ion-perfumery.co.uk for £31 for a 50 ml bottle and at www.escentual.co.uk for £36.50 for 50 mls.
