Colonic irrigation is a supplementary health practice which cleans the colon by flushing it with warm purified water. And unfortunately, when it comes to the colon, there's only one way in. Bend over, take deep breaths and think of something more pleasant.

Colonic irigation claims to undo the damage caused by the processed western diet and also give relief from many health problems which have their origin in the gut/colon/bowel.

Years of unhealthy eating result in our intestines getting clogged up with all manner of residues from sticky, starchy, overprocessed foods. These then harbour bacteria which can give rise to all manner of problems, such as bloating, parasites, fungal infections, digestive problems, IBS and more.

Having suffered from candida for years and tried everything I knew of to no avail, I read up on colonics and decided to give them a go, as much of the literature I'd read said that candida often lived in the gut, colon and bowel.

I was nervous. Call me unadventurous, but I'd never had a great big pipe up my backside before and didn't fancy it either, but as I said earlier, it's the only road going that way.

Confident I'd found a well-trained respectable practitioner (who incidentally showed me photos of the stuff she'd extracted from other people's colons over the years - nice), I lay on my side on her table and crossed my fingers while she inserted the tube and then proceeded to pass 8 gallons of warm water through my inner tubes.

The tube is a two-way thing - it's actually two tubes attached to one nozzle. One tube flushes water in and the other carries it (and the contents of your innards) away into a hidden receptacle. There is a little viewing window in the 'out' tube which the practitioner can look through to see the state of your 'waste products'. (You can't see it, fortunately, as you're facing the other way).

Does
it hurt? Well actually, no not at all, and the sensation of the water flowing through your system is really quite nice. The sensation of it all pouring out again, though, is very alien - like having a twenty minute constant bowel movement over which you have no control. The practitioner also gives you a vile herbal concoction to drink for several days before your session to make things 'looser', so believe me, it comes out at a rate of knots.

After a session of this you feel very light, very clean and on a bit of a mental high for the rest of the day.

All in all I had five sessions at one a week, at thirty five quid a time.

Did it work? Sadly for me, no. My candida continued to trouble me just as much as before and still does to this day. Six months later, I began to suffer from occasional IBS too, which I had never done before. I really don't know if having the colonics was a cause of this or not.

But this is just my own experience. Many people swear by colonics (Princess Di amongst them, I believe) and say they have been helped with all kinds of ailments.

Do I recommend it, then? Well, if you've exhausted all other avenues and have the money, then I don't think (although I can't be sure, what with the IBS) that it can do any harm, and it might be the quality-of-life-saver you've been looking for.

On the plus side, because you're getting rid of loads of heavy gunk you do lose weight - just a couple of pounds for me but I've read of people losing 10lbs to a stone. (BUT I DO NOT ENDORSE COLONICS AS MERELY AN AID TO WEIGHT LOSS.)

If you do decide to go ahead, then I would say just make sure you're with a qualified practitioner who is registered with the society of medical herbalists or similar registered body.

Make sure they are experienced and gentle, too. Otherwise you could be in for a very nasty shock.

Pass me a stool, please, vicar!

Wow!!! Lots of insight there!!!

I have recently been diagnosed with IBS so it would be interesting to see if it might relieve that for me as it's been pretty distressing over the last X amount of months/years (as I reckon I've had it that long but it took ages for the docs to take me seriously enough to have me checked out - Gawd bless the NHS!!!).

My stomach feels naff at the time of typing this, so anything that might have at least a chance of relieving it is a good thing in my book - so you never know.

I hope your stomach is being kinder to you and that you're not suffering too much with it as it's certainly no fun.

Best wishes,
Derek.
