Advantages: less hassle than shaving, long time between treatments, great for your holidays!
Disadvantages: some people find it uncomfortable
I've read quite a few of the ops on Dooyoo about waxing and most people complain about pain, inconvenience, pain, sticky bits, pain etc. However, I am here to support waxing and to tell you how brilliant it is! First of all I should explain there are two types of waxing. The first type is what I call "toffee apple" waxing. This is when a layer of wax is placed on the skin and is allowed to harden. It is then peeled off in one piece taking the hair with it. It resembles the covering from a toffee apple as it is made from beeswax, hence the name. The second type of waxing is normally done with tea tree containing wax. The wax is thinner than the first type, is creamy and has a green tinge due to the tea tree oil content. The wax is spread onto the skin and is then removed within a few minutes by a piece of linen material. The wax is then removed along with the unwanted hair. The big question then. Does it hurt? Well it all depends on your pain threshold. When the wax is applied to your skin it can be a little bit uncomfortable as it is rather warm. When the material is ripped off your leg, it's exactly the same as removing a plaster. Really it is! Its no more painful than ripping off a sticking plaster on a hairy bit of skin. So what can you get waxed? Well, everything really! Starting from the top - eyebrows, top lip, bottom lip, under arms, bikini line, legs and even the hairy bits on your feet! From the above list I've had five bits done and they were all perfectly bearable. The only one that made my eyes water was the bikini line. That really did bring tears to my eyes but I think that was perfectly understandable! I've never shaved my legs but that was mostly my mothers fault. She didn't want me mucking about with razors or having to shave my legs every 3 days. Therefore she introduced me to the wonders of waxing. First of all I went to get my underarms waxed to in
troduce me to the wonders of waxing. After this experience (which wasn't too nasty) I tried the half leg wax. This involves waxing from the knee to the ankle. This was fine and I've been continuing the process for the past 10 years. This has resulted in the hair growth on my legs becoming lighter over the years and I can go at least 6 weeks without being waxed. I think this is much less hassle than having to shave every couple of days and the regrowth is nowhere near as bad as it would be with shaving. I look on waxing as a type of exfoliation for my skin and a bit of a pampering for me. I don't have any other beauty treatments and I'm not exactly a strict "cut my hair every 6 weeks" person (more like once every 6 months). Be brave, ignore the scare stories and give it a go. Ask around your friends and I'm sure that several of them will be able to recommend a good beauty salon or even someone who can do waxing in the privacy of your own home. Don't go for a full leg wax or a bikini wax straight away. Break yourself in gently with an underarm wax to help to get you used to the sensation. Give it a go especially for your holidays - just think all those weeks without shaving!

- 31/07/02 I did it - was completely traumatised by it and have been too chicken to go for it again! They say you forget childbirth (wouldn't know - had two C-Sections) but I'll NEVER forget getting my bikini line waxed! |

- 01/03/02 yeah.... me too..... at least if you don't cut yourself then shaving isn't sore! Nice op though and you would have me convinced if I wasn't a big baby!! :0) |

- 29/10/01 I'm afraid I'll be a chicken about this forever - I've had my legs and bikini line waxed and the pain was just too much. I'll just carry on shaving as normal... :) |
