Advantages: effective, natural product, good on toast?

Disadvantages: bit painful, expensive ?

Being one of the unfortunate few blessed with more hair than I know what to do with I spent many years searching for the best razor only to discover that the throwaway type are as good as any except for my husband’s razor which he forbade me to use! However, I always ended up with at least one cut on my legs which I had to cover with an elastoplast and the bath often resembled Norman Bates’ Motel with blood spattered everywhere. Yuck.

I also suffered rashes both on my legs and under my arms so, although I might go out hairless I was scratching and itching to such an extent that I looked more apelike than I did when I was hairy.

The regrowth, in my case, took only a matter of hours. I could go out after the silk scarf test feeling quite confident but, when I got home and removed my tights my legs felt like sand paper and by the morning there they all were –little black stubbly hairs all standing proud and tall!

Then there are the creams- Oh dear, what a dreadful smell – what does it do to your skin I wonder? It takes ages to apply, even longer to scrape off and if you have very shapely legs (OK – fat legs) it costs a small fortune. The cream can also give you a nasty rash especially if you use it on your top lip and this, in turn, makes snogging rather unpleasant, which is defeating the object of doing it in the first place.

Waxing I have not tried apart from once on my top lip. You have to heat it up before applying it to the offending area and it might not seem that hot to your finger but, boy O boy it’s a different kettle of fish when you apply it to your face! As if that’s not bad enough you then have to rip it off; if you do it quickly you are in danger of ripping off your whole mouth. If you do it slowly it’s is absolute torture – no other way to describe it.

So, being the coward that I am I decided that if I was to remain looking like a human being rather than
something which crawled out of the jungle I must find a more permanent solution. Electrolysis was out of the question – with the number of hair follicles on my body needing electrocution there probably aren’t enough needles in the world to do it not to mention the cost.

I therefore opted for Sugaring. Based on a technique developed by the ancient Egyptians, Body Sugaring is a gentle and effective form of hair removal, using a natural ingredient - sugar. Body Sugaring paste is gentle on your skin, 100% environmentally - friendly with no animal testing, and if accidentally swallowed, delicious (before use of course not after!). The healing properties of sugar continue to benefit the skin as it has many healing properties.

No, it is not painless, far from it if you let the hair grow too long; the timing of your appointment is quite crucial as the hair has to be a certain length to be gripped by the sugar and removed. I normally have a full leg and top lip treatment which costs £19.00 and takes roughly an hour. Before the sugaring is done your skin is thoroughly cleansed and wiped dry. Then powder is applied to act as a key, I assume, for the sugar.

For small areas such as your top lip or eyebrows the sugar paste is put on the skin with a cotton bud and then a small cotton strip is pressed on to it and then removed very quickly with a flick of the wrist. After this the operator places her hand or finger quite firmly over the area, which stops the pain immediately. It is quite bearable it only lasts for a fraction of a second.

Larger areas such as your legs are treated differently. The sugar paste is applied to your skin in a small area in one direction and then it is flicked away in the opposite direction taking the hair and the root with it. This is done over the whole leg, bit by bit until the offending hairs have disappeared. The legs are then cleaned and healing oils applied to reduce any reddening. You are advised no
t to wash your legs with soap of shower gel until the next day if possible but I have not always adhered to this and I have not had any problems.

How long it lasts depends on how quick your hair grows but I go every 4 – 6 weeks which keeps me looking fairly respectable but I have to admit to using tweezers on my top lip between visits. The advantage of this system is that because the root is removed the hair growth is weakened and becomes finer, whereas when I used to shave the growth seemed coarser each time and much more noticeable.

It is possible to buy a kit for home use but I have not tried it as I know that the technique needed cannot be learned overnight. The training for this is quite extensive and I am not a masochist!

So funny - entertaining reading! I use depilatory cream which doesn't work as well as it used to. Maybe the hairs are growing thicker as I age!! (34 tomorrow!!!!) Razors for underarms and legs, or ladyshave for legs. I got my bikini line waxed about 9 years ago and still have a nervous tick with the effects and have never screamed so much!! I was bruised and bleeding and had to have an operation to remove an ingrowing hair!!! Have been looking into Epilite Hair removal but a small mortgage is required to pay for it!
