Advantages: Relief from Ear/sinus problems
Disadvantages: A bit expensive...but worth it!
Since being young my ears (along with my throat) have always been my weak point. I suffered many infections and periods of deafness and this continued into adult life. Along with that came excema inside the ear canals. A horrible conditions that makes you wish you could scratch your ears inside out! Many times this results in infections and deafness. As someone who sings a lot this was a great disadvantage as well as feeling a lot of discomfort.
About two years ago I saw an article in a magazine concerning a professional singer who had the same problem. She recommended ear candling.
Ear candling is a traditional Hopi Indian method of treating the ears and sinus areas.
In one packet you have 2 hollow candles. Usually these are made of beeswax and cotton fibres and many have added herbs/oils. The candle is gently inserted into your ear and lit. You lay on your side during the process. The special way of making ear candles means that the ash does not drop onto you. NO trying to make these yourself unless you are an expert!
At first there is the sound of crackling and sputtering as the candle burns. Gradually as the candle burns down you begin to feel heat inside your ear. This is NOT an uncomfortable feeling. In fact, I find it quite pleasurable and relaxing. Every
Once the candle has burned down to the marker, it is blown out and removed from the ear. It is best to stay on your side for about five minutes. After a time you can roll over and have the other ear candled.
Basically the treatment works because the hollow candle produces a vacuum - drawing out debris from the ear and circulating the air within - rather like having an inner ear massage. Because of this "drawing out" sensation, it can also be very useful for people suffering sinus problems and sometimes migraines/headaches.
It is a much less invasive procedure than having the ears washed out by a doctor and can be used on children (get a
dvice first!!!) DO NOT in any circumstances use these if you have a perforated ear drum or an infection in the ear. Get this cleared up first before using candles.
Many holistic centres offer this treatment - at a price of course but then it's quite nice to let someone else do all the fiddling about.
I personally use them on my own at home - but carefully. As I have very long hair I lay beside a mirror (with my eyes open) so I can clearly see how far down the candle has burned. You could of course get a friend/partner to help.
If the ear is seriously blocked with wax/etc then recommend treatment is for 7 days, then once a month for preventative measures.
I have found this a fantastic product to use and have recommended it so much to friends that the healthfood shop where I buy them had to start ordering in larger amounts!
I have seen a massive improvement concerning the excema and will certainly carry on using them.
The ONLY downside is that they are pretty expensive - although I am looking into bulk buying - maybe from the US. There are several different makes so you may have to try a few to see which you prefer.
Try them now!
