Disadvantages: Feeling like you want to die!
A hangover is the result of overindulgence in alcohol – so I’m told – I wouldn’t know myself of course! Ooops my nose appears to be growing here! No, seriously I have been known to suffer with the odd hangover and believe me odd is an understatement! The best thing to do is to try and minimise the problem on the night before when the actual drinking takes place. This isn’t as easy as it seems in the cold light of day. You have a drink and then another and soon all thoughts of damage limitation have flown away. To try and minimise the effects BEFORE you get too tipsy to care drink water before you go out so that you are not thirsty when you arrive at your destination. Drinking alcohol to quench a thirst is NOT a good idea at all! Eat something before you go out, or drink some milk – a bowl of cereals with milk would be ideal. Alcohol always gets into the bloodstream more quickly on an empty stomach. When you get to your watering hole pace yourself. For example my usual drink is dry white wine so I would drink spritzer made with dry white wine and slimline tonic. That way I get more drink for the same amount of alcohol. At a party I tend to refill my glass with wine and water alternately. The liquid in the glass looks the same either way so no one comments and I don’t drink as much. I have recently been given this tip – during the evening drink half a pint of water to every unit of alcohol. I tried this at a party recently and it worked a treat! I was fit enough to clear up the following morning and cook bacon sandwiches for our overnight guests! This brings me on to the very best tip I was ever given – when you get home after a night’s drinking try to drink at least a pint of water before you go to bed. The hangover the next morning is caused by dehydration and the pint of water gives you a head start (if you’ll forgive the pun) towards combating i
t. This may be quite difficult if you have had a lot to drink – trying to drink a pint of water may make you feel nauseous but do it if you possibly can it really does help. The other problem with this is remembering to do it when you’ve come home drunk. So, before you go out, put the glass ready to remind yourself, or ask your partner to remind you if he/she is staying relatively sober! OK so you’ve been out on the town and you’ve woken up the next morning thinking ‘Never again!’ – your body will be dehydrated, you may have a headache and feel nauseous. So now what do you do? Drink as much water as you can to replace the fluid lost - that is rehydrate your body. Drink pure orange juice as the vitamin C helps to combat the symptoms of a hangover. Go out for a walk if you can face it – fresh air and exercise help to get your body functioning normally again. If you feel really ill lie down if you can and rest – remembering to drink plenty of water of course. If your eyes are sensitive to the light, then wear dark glasses. DO NOT take a ‘hair of the dog’ i.e. a further drink, as this will only make the situation worse. DO NOT take aspirin, as this will make the stomach inflammation worse. Take a specialist hangover cure such as Alka Seltzer XS or Beechams Resolve. They really do work! If your hangover isn’t too bad it will clear within an hour of taking one of these remedies. A real belter of a hangover will take a bit more shifting – they don’t perform miracles! Have an early night – a good night’s sleep works wonders. Well, that’s about it. Hangovers are never easy to deal with and we always say we’ll never do it again don’t we – but we invariably do! Of course the only sure-fire way to avoid a hangover is not to drink – o
r is it? My partner usually drives and so stays sober. If he has been drinking Coca-Cola the night before he wakes up feeling as though he has a hangover! Not fair is it?

- 18/10/01 I find the sodium in a hot beefy Bovril helps when you feel like throwing up the next day. It's easy to sip on and stomach.Mind you, every time I start to see double, I know I'm in for trouble, and wonder why I've gone and done it all again! Ain't it always the way! |

- 18/10/01 Some valuable tips there.
The thing to remember really is that you need about 8 times the volume of water to the amount of alcohol consumed just to compensate for the dehydrating effect of alcohol.
