Premium Review Herbalism: natural products can be effective (856 words)
by - written on 16/03/09 (Very useful, 128 readings)
Rating:

Well as I'm currently beginning the studying herbalism etc, my biology degree possibly sparked some of my interest in this, I thought I'd go into some of the uses and benefits of some of the herbs and spices which we all commonly use. The effects vary from person to person and if you are on any prescribed medication you should always talk to your GP before taking any supplements containing herbs and spices. Whilst any interfering with each other is rare it is best to be safe. One known example is that St John's wort will stop the contraceptive pill from working properly. Also if you are pregnant you should check with your GP which are safe to use, this ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Hooray for Herbalism! (815 words)
by - written on 14/12/01 (Very useful, 47 readings)
Rating:

I was never a great believer in alternative therapies when I was younger, I regarded most people who did as 'a bit odd' or worse, hippies. But in the last seven or eight years, I have had the opportunity to learn about it and it has changed my opinion of a lot of therapies, though not all. Almost ten years ago my mum (to whom I am very close) decided to study to become a medical herbalist. She felt that she wanted to help people and had always leaned towards 'that kind of thing', as I thought of it. I listened to her struggle with the lessons in physology, psychology and case studies; I helped her with her revision for various exams at various ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Herbalism in the Head (543 words)
by - written on 19/09/01 (Very useful, 33 readings)
Rating:

I am sure that all devotees of complementary and homeopathic medicine will have heard the same sceptical approach from cynical friends and relatives "Herbs don't work! Its just all in your head!". Well they only get 1 mark out of two. It is all in your head, but herbs do work too! Of course if you have ever studied medicine you will of course know that most illnesses are in the head. The patient "knows" they have a headache or sore stomach or whatever the ailment, which makes the ilness harder to heal. When a trained Herbalist with all those fancy certificates and so many years experience gives you a tinctures, tea or ...  Read the complete review

There are many different herbal teas available in the supermarkets but its much cheaper and just as easy to make you own herbal teas if you follow a few simple guidelines. The suggestions below are all to do with the health of the digestive system. All the herbs mentioned are available in their dried form in UK. HOW TO MAKE HERBAL TEAS: +++++++++++++++++++++++++ This is very simple. Just infuse a couple of teaspoons of the required herb (vary according to taste) in a litre of water for about ten minutes. Strain the tea and add honey, lemon, or whatever you fancy. You can also drink this infusion cold, or, in some ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Herbalism: Are Herbal Remedies Really Safe? ALERT! (884 words)
by - written on 30/07/01 (Very useful, 246 readings)
Rating:

I was reading an article in a recent Readers’ Digest all about herbal remedies and how they can actually work against, reduce effectiveness of, or even magnify effects of G.P. prescribed medications. Apparently, many people are taking over-the-counter herbal preparations without prior consultation with their doctors, and these remedies are causing all sorts of complications. As I am on this healthy lifestyle kick, all this interested me greatly. I am not actually on any medication at the present time, but after reading the article, it occurred to me that if I were, I, like many others, wouldn’t even think twice about taking herbs because they are ...  Read the complete review
