Advantages: Natural alternative to synthetic drugs, Brings us back to Nature, It works!

Disadvantages: It can't cure everything, There are not that many trained practioners around

I am sure that all devotees of complementary and homeopathic medicine will have heard the same sceptical approach from cynical friends and relatives "Herbs don't work! Its just all in your head!". Well they only get 1 mark out of two. It is all in your head, but herbs do work too!

Of course if you have ever studied medicine you will of course know that most illnesses are in the head. The patient "knows" they have a headache or sore stomach or whatever the ailment, which makes the ilness harder to heal.

When a trained Herbalist with all those fancy certificates and so many years experience gives you a tinctures, tea or poultice or what-have-you you "know" you are going to get better, this positive belief helps the body heal itself.

But the herbs have a part of this too! To make the person "feel" ill it is caused by a certain abnormality within the body, eg. lack of vitamin c which causes less resistance to viruses such as colds and influenzas. Although the administration of the treatment stops the patient "feeling" ill it is the herbs which "cures" the illness by giving extra chemicals which the body was in lack of in the first place, thus getting rid of the abnormality.

Therefore it is harder to cure a cynic who refuses to think he/she is getting better because of the herbs than a steadfast believer in the miracles of Herbalism and Complementary medicine.

"Why bother use herbs? why can't you go to the doctors like everyone else?". Well although herbs can't cure everything, they can cure everything which synthetic drugs distributed by GPs can cure. Synthetic drugs are artificial copies of chemicals found in the plant world. Herbs also have an added bonus, ie. they're better! Also you can grow them yourself instead of having to get them from a laboratory.

I will give an example of this. Dandelion is a diurnetic. Ther
e are drugs which have the same properties as this. However due to the consumption of the diurnetic certain chemicals pass through body too quickly to be absorbed. The drug can't stop this, but the herb can. Other chemicals in the dandelion help to balance this out, therefore not creating an abnormality.

Herbs are great but they can also be deadly. Only take remedies from a trained complemetary practioner. No-one can stop you treating yourself, but get a reliable herbal and don't treat anyone else with your remedies, in case you accidently poison anyone. Authors of herbals don't take responsibility for anyone posioned due to remedies from their books.

Herbs also CAN'T CURE EVERYTHING. They ARE NOT AN ALTERNATIVE TO SURGERY. If you need a kidney transplant, herbs will help but won't make up for a new kidney. Don't be stupid, we are not in the Middle Ages and therefore don't have just Herbalism, and thankfully when illnesses are to great for our herbs we can fall back on modern day surgery.

Good op, where do people think we get medicines from in the first place, a lot of modern medicines are derived from plant extracts.

I don't tend to use herbal remedies too much but then I don't really have the need for them. A friend of mine is an aromatherapist and she has helped us in the past with all sorts of things.

You have to watch the toxicity of some herbs, and the possibility of idiosyncratic reaction.
