"Come into my surgery" he invited, pointing to a door on the left. I was skeptical, but having been ill for so long I would have tried anything. When someone suggested Kinesiology, I was skeptical, it all sounded a bit "new age" and to be honest, a bit of a fad. ~~~What is kinesiology?~~ Kinesiology is the cross-disciplinary study of physical activity, the performance of physical activities and a range of movement-related professional practices. Kinesiology is the study of movement. The term is fashioned from two Greek verbs, kinein and logus, which mean to move and to discourse, respectively. Kinesiology is basically, in its simplest sense the study of movement. Kinesiology encompasses both theory and practice the knowing about (theory) and the knowing how (practice) of movement in context. Kinesiology uses the response of the muscles, when gently tested, to find imbalances, which interfere with optimum function. If ignored, these imbalances may cause unwanted compensations, and ultimately deterioration in health and well-being. There are various branches of Kinesiology. All use the basic muscle-testing principle. All use a model based on traditional Acupuncture theory. Each Kinesiology very much reflects the interests and personality of its developer. Some branches of Kinesiology do not accept the use of muscle testing to obtain yes/no answers to verbal questions, but rely on a system of reflex points and finger modes to identify current stressors. Kinesiology does not treat disease. Kinesiology is the only method of approaching the body that is completely receptor driven. Ultimately Kinesiology practitioners relies completely on feedback from the receptors in the subject's body. Muscle testing enables investigation without intrusion, giving insight into the underlying causes and the solutions to many health problems. ~~My own Experience~~~ My problem was that I had been
ill for a long time and doctors could not agree on what was wrong with me. I didn't expect miracles as such. Instead I was hoping for answers as to where my problem lay. Now I was lying on an examination table of sorts and answering lots of questions. It appears that kinesiologists, like many other holistic therapists (homeopaths) need to get a real sense of you and your history before they start. Afterwards we moved on to the muscle testing stage. Kinesiology muscle testing involves applying gentle pressure on a muscle, and assessing the response. This is where it is very important to find an experienced kinesiologist, who is good at reading the signs. Interpretation and the reading of responses is the key to a diagnosis. Initially the kinesiologist asked me to push my arm back until it locked in order for him to make a basic assessment of how it felt when my arm locked, a comparison point I presume. The normal muscle response is to lock. By placing a limb in a particular position it is possible effectively to isolate an individual muscle (often an arm muscle) and test its response to this pressure. If the muscle gives way or is spongy, it indicates an energy disturbance in that area. Afterwards the practitioner started testing various points of my body to assess where the problem was. He placed his hand on my jaw and then asked me to lock my arm back. If the muscle locks then the response is “yes”, whereas, if the muscle is spongy the response is “no”. When he did this on my jaw my arm locked and he told me that was not my problem area. Later on he placed his arm on the top of my spine (typically associated with stress problems). This time my body had no ability to lock, it was spongy and he told me that this was a problem area and a sign that I was stressed. He continued to assess other areas of my body, making notes as he went along. The key thing you need to remember, is that seeing a kinesiolo
gist alone will not solve your problems. It does however offer various techniques and procedures and can help to select the procedures which will help to restore balance. The techniques used may, for example, involve: The person thinking a specific thought, having a magnet placed on them and having a homeopathic remedy placed on them. In addition the practitioner might suggest that the person takes a flower essence or nutritional supplements and advise changes in life style. The specific recommendations are based on asking the body, through the muscle-testing, which is the appropriate thing to do. The practitioner that I was using firstly told me that I needed to have my back sorted out with some osteopathy, as it was tense and full of stress. He then gave me some B Vitamins which he thought would help me. It is important to stress that having kinesiology in itself will not cure any problems that you have. However, it is excellent at directing you to an appropriate course of action. Obviously just telling me I was suffering from stress was not going to make it go away, although it did give me some piece of mind. This is very much the first step in recovery. Thus, this is especially advisable for people who are having difficulties finding out what exactly is wrong with them. ~~What you mean there's more??~~ I also found something else interesting when I was there. Kinesiology can be used to determine if you have a food allergy. The next time I returned to see this man I was told to take with me foods that I usually eat. Once again I found myself lying on the couch with my arm in the air so he could test with my muscles. Each time he placed the food item, for example, a loaf of bread on my stomach area and then he tested my muscle response. If my muscle could not hold it and was spongy it meant I had an allergy to that product. This is great, as it just means you can remove it from your diet and the problem is
gone. I found it fascinating lying there seeing my body react. It was brilliant to see how my body was speaking for itself to someone trained to read it. ~~My thoughts and conclusions~~ Writing this all out, it all seems so simple and not at all like rocket science. However, I am hooked and totally baffled by its ability. If you think you may have an allergy to something, but can’t quite pin point it, then this is well worth considering. Or course, I would advise that you go to see someone recommended to you, as there are many charlatans around. I paid £30 for an half hour session with a practitioner. It was well worth the money. Many people are still very sceptical of kinesiology though and many fail to recognise it at all, my GP included. However, if you are into alternative therapies then it is definitely worth trying and there are no side effects, apart from a lightened wallet! As I mentioned kinesiology is a not a cure in itself. However, many practitioners of kinesiology also practice other alternative practitioners and so you can often get your whole treatment programme in the same place. Mine for example also was a practicing osteopath, homeopath and masseur. I am still battling with my health, but I certainly feel better for getting some insight into what exactly was wrong with me. After a diagnosis I went on to see an accupuncturist and I took up yoga in my battle against stress.Kinesiology is not a miracle cure, however, you can get piece of mind from it if nothing else!
