Advantages: Beautiful fragrance and light texture
Disadvantages: The cocoa butter fragments can be a pain
As I said in my Candy Fluff review I happened to buy a few varieties of body powder and I'm so glad I did! For the few years I've been using them, I've been using them all year round and not just in the summer months! I am absolutely hooked with these and I hope Lush never stop making the product as I know me and quite a few other Lush followers will be deeply annoyed!
Lush's concept for Silky Underwear is initially clever; a cornstarch-based powder that keeps you fresh, but it also contains grains of cocoa butter that moisturize the skin and keep it soft under the powder's clean veil. Depending on your needs, you can use it alone, or do what a sales assistant has shown me once; use a good lotion (probably go for a light lotion) and then lightly powder yourself all over it. This way even the driest skin remains happy, but your legs won't stick to each other when you cross them. Some days that's the greatest achievements - that's how sad my work life really is!!
Silky Underwear has a simple but ultra-elegant fragrance, possibly one of the most sensual in the world; pure jasmine (how could anyone not like this fragrance?!). Jasmine is one of those sweet florals that can strike many as overpowering when standing on its own, but not so in Silky Underwear's case, especially considering it's rounded out with just a touch of smoky vetivert, meant to bring out this aphrodisiac's headier aspects. The vetivert oil brings out the almost woody side to Silky Underwear but fear not unlike some of Lush's "hippie" fragrances this isn't one of them.
But aside from the enticing fragrance, I have quite a few complaints about Silky Underwear. With a cornstarch base, Silky Underwear goes on quite smooth, though considering it also contains kaolin (china clay), if you apply it while still damp after a shower, it can get a bit cakey and leave white streaks in its wake (especially if you apply it with your hands, where it literally adopts a clay-like consistency when met with any amount of moisture). However I have found the best way to overcome this is to completely dry off my your shower/ bath and apply with a powder puff rather than the hands as it goes on your skin a lot lighter and evenly.
However this isn't helped by the tiny fragments of cocoa butter; though the intention was to offer the additional benefit of moisturisation, because these shreds of cocoa butter wind up with tons of powder attached to their oily surface, they often only serve to disrupt this powder's otherwise soft consistency (and often fall to the floor during application as opposed to melting down and being absorbed into the skin.) Whilst Lush had a great idea and when you first read it's description you think it is faultless however unfortunately I think adding something solid to a powder is not the best result all round.
Lastly, as with most of Lush's Dusting Powders, there's also the issue of packaging. The pot is leaky, and no matter how you apply this powder (whether by brush, puff, or hand), it winds up everywhere because the holes on the pot's top are highly unaccommodating. My advice is to store this powder in a seal-tight container of your own as I said before in my review on Candy Fluff. I just hope they bring out new containers soon!
The powder is white in color, medium in density and, true to its name, silky as the day is long. After I had applied Silky Underwear my skin felt softer, smoother, and did I mention that this powder smells wonderful? While not as moisturising as a lotion, I was pleased with the silkiness of my skin while using Silky Underwear. This dusting powder is no magic cure for rough elbows and such, but on skin that is already in good condition, it does seem to lock in and retain moisture. Best of all, the fragrance lingered for hours without re-application without being overpowering.
What Lush say:-
Smooth, sensual jasmine powder with tiny helpings of moisturising cocoa butter.
Centuries ago when baths were considered unhealthy and showers were something you got caught in because there were no such thing as weather forecasts, scented powders were used by the aristocracy to perfume their bodies and hair. We'd like to evoke that tradition with the help of sexy scents of jasmine and vetivert stirred into smooth powders with a smattering of cocoa butter but may we suggest that you use it after bathing not instead of? You'll make more friends that way.
Silky Underwear costs £5.63 for a tub weighing 80g which is the same price as most of the other body powders. I mainly use Silky Underwear before a night out as I love the fragrant scent of jasmine, but it's ideal for use at anytime of the day and no matter what you're doing!
I can safely say I've been completely and forever converted into a body powder lover I am quite fond of Silky Underwear and have no plans to stop using it in the near future.
Summary: Fabulous for a night out!
