Advantages: Mainly natural ingredients, Gentle, Fun to use

Disadvantages: Going overboard and ending up like a greased piglet!

Ah, Lush. Known and loved by millions (well, maybe not that many, but it ought to be.) Like most I was drawn into Lush by the smell which drifted across the street, and entranced by the bath ballistics, and - it looks like cheese! - soap. For a while that was all I considered buying, vaguely registering the unassuming black pots stacked in the corner.

It's only since Lush opened in my home town - O happy day - that I've looked more closely at the skincare range. Up until recently I've been using Clinique's 3-step bloody expensive system, and was starting to find it horribly abrasive and irritating. My face would crumble up at the approach of the purple brake fluid-style toner, and then scream when I slathered on the yellow "moisturiser". Anyway... to cut a painful story short, I needed something new.

Enter Lush. Oh god. Oh god...now my skin glows with health and melts with the softness, and my heart weeps with gratitude.

Ultra bland. It sounds dull, but the words should be uttered with reverence. Ultra bland, all hail. It looks unassuming, smells vaguely like peanut butter, thoroughly cleans your skin, and leaves you all soft and pink and lovely looking. I first tried it after a day in London and there was a kind of sick fascination in examining the flannel and seeing the black streaks of gunge that Ultra bland had sucked out of my pores.

When it came to moisturiser I was feeling extravagant, and asked the shop assistant ?what do they put in Skin?s Shangri-La to make it so expensive?? (It?s £20 a pot.) She gave me a full description, and I was all ready to splash out, when she said, ?But I think you?d be better off with Afterlife.? She told me it would give my skin ?zing?, and after I smelt it, all honey and flowers, I had to have it. It was slightly cheaper than the Shangri-La, and MUCH cheaper than Clinique. It does smell very good, is very moisturising, but it still stings my skin slightly, so I thin
k I should be keeping it for less frequent use and finding a gentler moisturiser.

Enchanted Eye Cream ? ahh? again, it doesn?t look like much, just a pure white and thin cream, but it is very good. Sean, my husband, was trying to get people to smell his eyes after he tried it. But he is a little weird.

Mirror Mirror neck cream has the best fragrance ever. If you?ve tried the Fever massage bar (the one with a lipstick-red top) you?ll know the smell I mean. It is just adorable, and makes me feel adorable. I keep mentioning the smell, but it also contains meadowsweet to refresh, and liquidised tiger lily petals (how glamorous is that!) to firm the skin.

When it comes to body moisturisers, I am now torn between two products ? the King of Skin, and Potion. The aforementioned is a solid, crown-shaped banana, cocoa butter, and shea butter offering, the latter a light, flowery lotion. Both are excellent; King of Skin is especially good on skin that is very dry, and you need time to make the most of it, because it takes a lot of rubbing in. It?s very good to use on dry patches on the feet; I sometimes put it on under socks in bed, and in the morning, voilą, newly soft tootsies. Potion is much lighter with a flowery and unusual smell. I don?t know many products which are fragrant with the scent of carnations. It?s odd but very addictive.

I haven?t tried every product in the range, but I haven?t yet found anything I wouldn?t recommend. (Honourable mentions must go to their fresh skincare products too.) Lush products have honest ingredient lists on the outside of each item, and it?s so good to know that they favour fresh, organic ingredients, and that a minimum of synthetics are used. My skin thanks them for it!
