Massage can be defined as the manipulation of the soft tissues and muscles of the body for therapeutic purposes. It has amazing self healing effects on the body and mind achieving a holistic (or whole) approach.
What effects does massage have on the body?
Massage can stimulate and relax the body and mind. The skin, blood and lymphatic systems are stimulated, which boosts circulation, aids cellular renewal and removes toxic wastes. As tense muscles relax, stiff joints losen and nerves are soothed.
THE NERVOUS SYSTEM-
This is a highly complex network which relays messages from the brain to the rest of the body. Millions of nerve endings run throughout the body, controlling many of the bodys functions. Depending on the depth of massage movements used, the nerve endings can be stimulated producing a feeling of invigoration and inducing relaxation.
THE SKIN-
With massage, comes an increase in blood circulation. This helps the exfoliation of dead skin cells, which tones the skin and encourages cellular renewal. Massage helps to maintain the collagen fibres, which gives skin its elasticity and helps keep wrinkles at bay!!
MUSCLES AND JOINTS-
With the increase in blood f low, the blood's vital nutrients are able to circulate more effectively. Massage is popular with sportsmen/women becasuse it can help improve muscle tone, restore mobility and ensure the elimination of waste products from the body after excercising. Deep massage movements performed around joints help to keep the joints mobile and help to relieve stifness.
BLOOD AND LYPHATIC SYSTEM-
By dilation of the blood vessels, massage increases the blood's circulation which means that important constituents such as oxygen and nutrients reach the billions of individual cells, which is essential in the healthy functioning of the whole body!
EMOTIONAL EFFECTS-
The psychological benefits of massage are unlimited and should never be underestimated. We very rarely have time for relaxation from stresses of modern day living and this can begin to take effect on the body. Massage can promote a glowing sense of well-being as well as reducing anxiety and depression.
