Advantages: sparkly, pretty on your lips, smooth application
Disadvantages: glitter gets everywhere! , The packaging is now looking a bit rough
For my recent Summer Ball at uni I persuaded myself that I needed a couple of things, such as Hugo Boss woman perfume… Along with this perfume, I purchased the Maybelline Liquid Diamonds Lip Gloss. I noticed that it had a £1 knocked off it in Boots and just couldn’t resist; well, it was only £4.99. It looked so cute on the shelf, slim and small with silver lids and the prettiest, sparkliest stuff inside just twinkling at me and begging me to buy it. “Buy me, buy me!” It was crying out to me, so I did. My excuse is, I am a girl… Once I got it home I just had to open it up to see what it was like, even though I’d promised myself I would save it for the ball. Then, logic took over and I reasoned that I needed to check that it would suitable for such an event by wearing every day until the night! I took the sponge-tipped applicator out of the bottle and inspected it. So far, so good. My shade was 06 Strawberry carats, and I chose this one because it was a nice pinky colour but not too bright or salmon-like. On the applicator it didn’t look too sparkly but this was fine by me, I’m not a big fan of overdoing it with makeup. One problem I have since encountered is with the shade, because mine clearly says on the end that it is 06 Strawberry Carats. However, on the website while researching for this op, I noticed that my shade does not seem to exist! The full list of shades is as follows: 1. Cocoa Shake 2. Cranberry Sherbet 3. Raspberry Cream 4. Pink Lollipop 5. Guava Juice 6. Rose Jam 7. Berry Cream 8. Vanilla Ice 9. Cherry baby 10. Grape Frappe 11. Brandy Rum 12. Hazelnut Sauce 13. Ice tea 14. Cotton Candy 15. Orange Squash 16. Strawberry Shortcake 17. Glazed Apple 18. Beige Cream 19. Precious Lilac This is what I got from the website and as you can see, Strawberry Carats is not on there! This is slightly worrying, however o
n another trip Boots a couple of days ago, I noticed that Strawberry Carats is shade number 8… while my lip-gloss clearly has number 6 on it. This might be a bit of a problem if you were ordering the product online – when purchasing it make sure you have definitely got the shade you want! When applying this to my lips I found that there was too much product on the applicator so I just wiped a bit off on the rim. It glides beautifully onto your lips, and feels very smooth but not sticky at all. Looking more closely into the mirror, I was very impressed at how it looked. Glossy, gorgeous colour and sparkly! But, not so much sparkle that I was beaming out like a teenybopper. Sad but true, I felt lovely once I’d put this lip gloss on, and even though it was a few days till the ball, I just couldn’t save it till then. I was amazed that even my boyfriend commented that it looked nice. Unfortunately, he wasn’t so impressed when it covered his lips as well. Because, that is where the flaw in the lip-gloss lies… it just does not stay on your lips. Once kiss, one drink, one meal – it’s gone and you have to reapply it. The colour does not stay on your lips at all, but the sparkles do, so by the end of a night out my boyfriend and I are both covered in tiny flecks of golden glitter. That makes us sound like we spend the whole night kissing, but seriously this stuff spreads a long way, so if you put a tiny bit on your mouth and then touch your mouth and then touch something else and then someone else brushes against that something – golden glitter everywhere! This is good on the one hand because it means that you don’t have to use much of the stuff on your lips and even though the colour goes pretty much straightaway, the sparkles remain to keep your lips twinkling. However, this is obviously annoying when everywhere you go you leave a trail of breadcrumbs… I mean, glitter… Anoth
er disadvantage is that after owning this lip-gloss for about two months, the packaging looks awful. The silver writing has completely gone and the silver rim looks scuffed. The colour and glitter of the lip gloss have actually separated, which isn’t as bad as it sounds because you can mix it up before you use it, but still, it doesn’t look very good. I’m a bit disappointed that it doesn’t look as cute as it did when I bought it but I’ll live with it… or buy another one… A quick note on the website, www.maybelline.co.uk - It is useless! It isn’t really worth looking at but if you need to desperately contact them then this is the only way I can find of doing it. Unfortunately, the packaging offers no other address for you to contact the company, and on the website, if you wish to contact them about something you have to fill in a ‘query form’ which I find a little annoying. So, if there was something you really needed to speak to them about, such as an allergy enquiry or something like that, well it would take you a fair amount of effort to get in touch. So, in summary, would I buy this lip-gloss again? Definitely! Yes, it comes off easily and yes you return from a night out looking like Tinkerbell’s older and inebriated sister but it looks so gorgeous! And feels so gorgeous! It might not be worth all the money, but it’s a treat that I cannot resist, and though I don’t usually like any colour on my lips apart from clear gloss, this may have just about converted me.
