Advantages: makes kids more confident
Disadvantages: the squint is still noticable when not wearing glasses
My youngest son has had a squint in his right eye since a very early age, it was first noticed when he was around three years old.
He was refered to the hospital and they examined his eyes, they said that his sight was very poor and that they might need to operate, but they wanted to try patches first to see if this would improve his sight.
Patches
So they give me about four boxes off patches to start me off, and sent me to an optician with a prescription to get his glasses made up.
The patches are like big plasters in the shape of a pirates patch and they are the same colour as a normal plaster, We thought he would have kicked up a fuss, with having to wear them, but he was fine and did`nt mind at all.
He had to wear the patches on the left eye for one hour everyday, at times when he would be doing activities such as colouring in or playing games, as this would help to strengthen the weak eye, we were advised the best time for him to wear the patches was when he was in Nursery,.
Hospital visits
Every three months he would have to attend the eye clinic at the hospital, and they would check he eyes to see if his sight had improved any, sometimes it did improve and other times it was just the same, however it had not improved as much as they had hoped and he still needed the operation.
The operation
They put him on the waiting list and within six months he had an appointment, the operation was on the 4 sept 2006, aged 5 at this point. He went into hospital that morning and had the operation to correct his squint, his was very drowsy but, after a few hours he was out off hospital and back home.
Bruising
We expected him to have a lot off bruising, but there was none, his eye lid was red and it was difficult at first for him to open. He had to stay off school for 10 days to prevent infection, and he had a follow up appointment to make sure the operation was a sucess.
A success
The operation was a success, although when he takes his glasses off you can still see his squint, but the point of the operation was to straighten his eye when wearing the glasses, he will wear glasses for the rest of his life. I am glad we let him have the operation as his eyesight has really improved and he no longer wears the patches. So all in all the operation was worth it.
Thanks for reading
