Advantages: pimples stop appearing, face getting clearer

Disadvantages: expensive, dry lips

i've been an acne sufferer since i was 12+ and like every other teenager who has acne, i was very self-conscious and i was looking down at the floor most of the time in school to avoid my clear-face friends from staring at me. my acne was very bad; i had a pizza face. and i've cried a lot over my appearance and i pestered my parents to take me to a dermatologist. so i did see one when i was 14+ in April 2008. and he prescribed me Roaccutane. he said that roaccutane was to dry up the sweat glands so that they stop producing oil, oil which will consequently produce acne. i was to take a 10mg and 20mg alternately every day and i would have to take it for 8 months to completely dry up the glands.

the moment i started taking roaccutane, no more spots appeared for a long while (before taking them, i always had several pimples popping out at once within a few days). after about 2-3 months, i could see that my face was getting clearer, the red spots were getting lighter. at the same time, some of the scars at the side of my face were also gone and my forehead has been completely smooth without a single bump. i have read certain reviews that say that their acne gets worse before getting better. that was not the case for me. my acne did not get worse first before it started to get better. it was only getting better.

before i was on the pills, my cheeks were the worst acne-infected part of my face. now i've been on roaccutane for close to 7 months, and the red spots on my cheek are barely visible (ok, A BIT visible). within the span of these 7 months, i have had only 3 breakouts which were easily gone by putting on some aloe vera cream or Fucicort. during the past 3 months, i've noticed that the red spots were getting lighter and fainter, but not completely gone. so i asked my doctor whether it would be COMPLETELY gone, and he said that it would within a couple of months after the end of my course. i'm keeping my fingers crossed for that!

as for the disadvantages, i only suffered from dry lips. before i took Roac., i did some research online and found that dry skin and depression were some of the side effects. after knowing the side effects, i was a bit wary that i would suffer from sudden changes of mood or depression. i can assure you that i have NEVER experienced any of those two side effects. i was and am still my normal self, even my lips aren't that dry anymore. and of course, taking these pills has burned a hole in my parents' wallet.

so, right now i can only wait for the last remaining month and see what happens after that. but roaccutane has certainly hepled my situation, without a doubt. even when i was only 4 months on the pills, my friends were remarking that my face was indeed getting clearer. i've just recently looked at pics of myself taken in May, and holy crap, who was that self-conscious girl with pimples all over her face staring back at me??

acne certainly brings one's self-confidence down, and i urge anyone who suffers from acne to undergo treatment asap. you don't want to go around the rest of your life envying your friend's beautiful, flawless skin when you yourself can have that skin.

after my course end, maybe i'll drop by here again to give an update. hopefully then i would really be free of acne! :)
