Advantages: Gets your Eyesight back
Disadvantages: None Whatsoever
I write this opinion in the hope that you may never experience eye cataracts, or any other eyesight related problems, but in the event that you do have to undergo a cataract operation I hope that you might gain some insight, and enlightenment about the procedures involved from my experience. Roughly 2 years ago I began to notice that when I was looking at TV or my Computer screen I had to get closer and closer in order to see properly. The deterioration in my sight came about so very slowly that I thought, well, being 55 Years of age at that time, it was just old age very gradually creeping in and thought no more about it. Then, as it eventually grew worse, I had great difficulty making out the number or destination of approaching buses for instance, I decided to go to my optician for a prescription for pair of stronger glasses. After the eye examination, my optician pronounced that I had cataracts in both eyes, my right eye being well advanced and my left eye being less affected. Well, to say I was surprised would be an understatement because I thought that only ‘very old ‘people get cataracts, and even though my name is ‘auldmac’ I don’t as yet classify myself as being all that ‘old’ The reason that I’m going into this detail is that you might actually be in the same ‘boat’ as me, and like me didn’t realise it. Right, what is a cataract ?? A cataract is basically a clouding over of the lens of the eye, the part that lets the light shine in. As the cloudiness progresses, less light gets in and your eyesight deteriorates. A cataract can be caused by a small defect present at your birth, patiently waiting to progress in the fullness of time, or it can be brought about by the general ageing process present in all our bodies, or by too mush exposure to bright sunlight, and the only way to deal with it is to have the
offending cloudy lens removed and a new plastic lens inserted. I know you might start shuddering at this point, so I hastily assure you that it is not nearly as terrible as it looks in writing. Having been referred to my local Eye Hospital in Glasgow, I was examined by a specialist eye surgeon whom I have christened 'Saint Theresa' and the date was set for my operation. On the day of the operation I arrived at the Hospital, was taken to the operating theatre, and after a local anaesthetic, a small incision was made in the side of my eye, the old cloudy lens was removed and a new clear lens was inserted. The pain factor was absolutely minimal due to the anaesthetic and a few days later I could see again. During the operation which only took about 15 minutes, my head was covered and I couldn’t see anything and thanks to the anaesthetic I couldn’t feel anything, it was at worst slightly ‘uncomfortable’ After getting my eyesight back, at first, everything I looked at was very ‘ bright’ and I kept noticing how bright all the colours were. Then I noticed that if I closed first my Right eye which had the operation, then opened and closed each of my eyes in turn, I could actually 'see' by comparison how far the cataract in my other eye had progressed. If you are waiting for a cataract operation I can definitely assure you that you have nothing to worry about as the great majority of cataract operations are successful, and after all, consider your options, either have a wee relatively straightforward and fairly painless operation or get prepared for blindness. I would like to respectfully dedicate this opinion to Saint Theresa at Gartnavel General Hospital in Glasgow for working the Miracle that she did for me in giving me back my eyesight. auldmac
