If left undetected or untreated, the precancerous changes can progress to cervical cancer, which can spread to other organs and cause death. However, if caught early, especially in the precancerous stage, with regular smear tests and physical examinations, complete cure is the rule. Most health authorities advise a test every 3 years. Let's be honest, you never think that you could be the unlucky one so you put off having it done..there is always next month after all. That month runs into six and before you know it several years have passed. I mean, a Cervical Smear Test is never high up on one's 'to do' list, is it? There are always campaigns about the importance of having a smear test but if you are anything like me you just tend to ignore them, especially if you feel absolutely fine and think that there couldn't possibly be anything wrong. Cervical cancer is a malignancy of the cells lining the surface of the cervix, the opening to the uterus. Cervical ...  Read the complete review

I have not had cervical cancer but have had cancer prevention treatment. I thought I would add my experience to the opinions already written under this subject. In December 1999 I discovered I was pregnant. At the same time I received a letter asking me to come for my routine 3 yearly smear. They don’t do these if you are pregnant so the next time I was asked to have a smear was the following September, at my 6 week post-natal check. I was still bleeding after the birth at this point, and I’d had an extremely painful episiotomy so again the smear was put off. We moved house that October and when I registered with my new GP he didn’t ...  Read the complete review

I have just read sandyd's excellent opinion and thought I would share my very different experience. It started thirteen years ago after a routine three year smear test. I had it done, reluctantly I might add as I think most of us do, but boy was I glad I did. When my result came back after three weeks the doctor sent me a letter asking me to come in for a retest as there were not enough cells. I had to go back a further four times until they could get enough to test, and my GP said that although it looked suspicious but it could be left until my next routine smear. He called me early for the next one and it duly came back as borderline, and I was ...  Read the complete review

I'll never forget that nurse holding my hand as the doctor sat at the stool strategically placed at my nether regions as l was speadeagled out like a trussed up chicken. Aye, aye, l thought whys she holding my hand. It wasn't long before l found out as the pain caused by his fumbling hit me like a steam train in full throttle. This was my first 'colposcopy' appointment, l was 26, scared and alone. We were lucky in our area that we had a unit in our local hospital to treat women who had been referred from their local G.P's surgery. I was one of those. It had started a year and 2 months before. I went for the oh so vital routine 3 ...  Read the complete review

Having just read Flossy's op on Cervical Cancer, I debated whether to write about my experience of abnormal cells likely to change to cervical cancer if left untreated. Five years ago I had my routine smear test and within a few weeks I had a call from my G.P. asking me to visit him, this was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. I feared the worse, what about my children and my Husband I was totally distraught. I went along and he explained that abnormal cells had been found on the neck of my cervix, so I was sent along for a biopsy. The results were not good so I had laser treatment, which entailed having all the precancerous ...  Read the complete review
