Advantages: Our experience of chickenpx in a toddler

Disadvantages: It's horrid

Littlest HonestBob has chickenpox.

Ten days ago we thought he was teething, eight days ago we though he had ear ache due to the amount of ear pulling he was doing and six days ago he came down with what we thought was a nasty cold, lots of snot and a night time cough.

Four days ago he came up in 5 spots (could be bites, i conned myself)

Three days ago he had 11 spots and I took him to see the pharmacist, raised my suspicions and gained his agreement.

Two days ago he 16 spots and 2 vesicules (fluid filled spots) and 2 scabs (on his back where the elasticated waist of his nappy had rubbed).

Yesterday the vesicules had taken over from the spots, he had several more scabs and I finally (herrrumph) got an appointment with my Gp. He confirmed chickenpox. A mild case, but chickenpox nevertheless.

Now that the spots are here Littlest HonestBob is much happier, a little less snotty and no longer ear pulling or coughing. He only had a slight temperature about four days ago. Luckily he is not itching too often. The scabs (yuk) on his head are bothering him more than any others.

We have used aqueous with calamine cream after bathtime and calpol to reduce his temperature, other than that we've not needed any medical intervention. I do have a bottle of piriton at hand should the itching get out contro.

I think the pox are on their last legs now and expect him to return to nursery in another 4 or 5 days time. Thankfully

Rating 1/5 - can't really rate chickenpox highly!!

Cut his nails to try and reduce scratching damage and keep baths cool and short as heat can make the itching worse. My son recovered quite quickly once the spots were actually out and eleven days into the spots all he has left are a few little scabs and a slightly reduced appetite. Back to nursery tomorrow!
