These are two views of depression and its effects.
It would take several volumes to describe how the sufferer feels, and another couple of volumes to express the affect the sufferer has on his/her friends and family.
These are two short poems of mine which, I hope, shows both sides of the coin. If it helps ONE person then 'twas worth writing.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~The Silent Thief of Life~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So slowly and so silently, Depressions' vice-like-grip
Strangles and distorts the mind,which then begins to slip.

It slides into a cavern. A dark and hostile place,
where battles there are often lost; when reason falls from grace.

The pain of flesh is nothing, compared to mind's despair.
If only we had known in time, that you would visit there.

We might have eased you out again, into a world of hope,
and been your willing crutches until you'd learned to cope.

Instead, we are to suffer now, a pain akin to yours.
In helpless grief and anger, at the act, true faith deplores.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In A Moment Of Weakness~~~~~~~~~~

It was not my intention to cause you so much pain.
Depression held me prisoner,
With more to lose than gain.

Life became untenable; my hopeful visions - gone.
Roads that led to peace of mind,
Were blocked and far too long.

My problems seemed so petty, when shown the light of day,
But each was insurmountable.
My mind was easy prey.

A feeling of unworthiness, like cancerous tissue, grew.
Adding to the burden
I couldn't inflict on you.

I craved, as if addicted, relief from all the strain;
And in my weakest moment -
Too late - found peace again.
