Advantages: That things can only get better
Disadvantages: Your boss telling you- you are a wimp- when depressed following a bereavement
What I want to share about depression is my hope that in time it will be ok to talk about it- it will be accepted as something that happens in life to some people from time to time.
Nobody would be embarassed to admit that they had chicken pox as a child, no adult would be laughed at or thought less of if they had to have time off with a broken leg.
It will take more and more people like Alistair Campbell to admit they had a breakdown, following which, whether you agree with his politics or not, he went on to become a very influential political figure. It has to be viewed as a problem you can come thru, and go on to thrive in society.
At the moment it is ok to say you are depressed for a short time- but only to the degree - that you can be depressed cos the local shoe shop sold the last pair of your favourite shoe in your size before you had chance to get to the shop as in "oh I am sooooooo depressed.............".
Only with close friends and family are you allowed to admit that your world feels like it is collapsing around you and you cannot handle it.
Sometimes depression arrives following something which acts as a catalyst- sometimes it just arrives.
I am sure that not being able to talk about it is one of the biggest contributors to the situation getting worse.
So let's accept mental problems as we do physical problems- where we want to do all we can to help the sufferer get better, where we want to help, where we understand.
For only when it comes without any feeling of shame or inadequacy attached will we not have that added pressure.

- 11/07/09 There are people who will listen to you if you need to talk, but sadly they are rarely those close to you like friends or family.
Also people some people don't seem able to make a distinction between being depressed (as in the shoe shop selling out of your favourite shoes) and actually having depression as a condition, which is a whole different ballgame.
Being depressed about the shoes or your local football team losing probably can be cured by taking the fed-up one out for a slap up meal or to a wild party to jolly them out of it, but like you say - for someone with depression proper, all "snap out of it", "cheer up it'll never happen" just makes the sufferer feel a million times worse. |

- 06/07/09 Crazy isn't it if we lived in U.S.A and weren't in "therapy" for one reason or another we would be weird, but over here unfortunately "depression" seems to be seen as a weakness, I don't know why since everyone gets depressed at some point in their life. |
