Advantages: none
Disadvantages: a nasty skin disease
Eczema I do not envy anybody who has this skin disease; I have had to watch my daughter suffer with it. She seems to be fighting an uphill battle all the time, I could cry for her when it is really enraged. It started on her feet when she was aged twenty-two. Just dry flaky skin to begin with then it flared up with a vengeance. Her feet were that red and inflamed she had trouble finding footwear. Work had to stop she was unable to stand on her feet for long. The doctors did allergy tests, they even tested fibres from her carpet at home, and nobody was saying eczema at this point, because it was only on her feet. It wasn’t long before her face flared up; her ears were quite nasty and red raw. If She scratched it just made matters worse, and after a bath she used to be demented, if the water was any warmer than tepid it drove her mad for a few hours. The doctor prescribed Hydrocortisone cream, this helped for a while, in fact her face and ears cleared up nicely, but then her feet flared up again with a vengeance. The doctor said that it was eczema, and stress can cause it to flare up. She decided to try evening primrose capsules, after all anything is worth trying. She was prescribed some strong steroids, her feet improved and her face completely cleared within a week. That was three months ago and touchwood she has not had a flare up since. The doctor said that stress can make eczema worse, so I keep my fingers crossed that she stays clear for a long time to come.

- 02/04/01 I think once you get into a routine and know how to treat it before it gets too bad eczema is not too difficult to treat. The problem is actually finding the most effective cures - there are so many and not all of them work for everyone. |

- 23/03/01 Has she tried evening primrose oil? It is recommended for eczema and dry skin (as people with these problems are usually lacking in essential fatty acids). It greatly improved my skin and got rid of my eczema, I now only get the odd patch on my hands. I take 1000mg a day, but I think you need to take 2000-3000mg a day for the first six months (to get it into your system). I'm surprised her doctor hasn't recommended it, especially as it won't cause her any harm (as long as she's not epileptic). Dairy products are also supposed to be bad for eczema, although I can't comment on this as I'm allergic to them anyway. |
