I get patches of eczema which seem to break out for apparent reason. I wonder sometimes if it is stress related as I can sometimes link it to things that have caused me to worry.
The first sign is a roundish, red patch which itches mildly at first. Then the skin breaks and it looks really ugly. The itching increases but scratching is the one thing you just mustn't do. I usually get patches on my hands and along the front of my shin bone. Tights, stockings, jeans or trousers rub on this and make it very sore and it starts to weep. I usually have to wear a long skirt so that nobody can see the horrific state of my legs. I can't go swimming or wear shorts of course.
I was prescribed hydrocortisone cream and it did take the itch out and promote fairly fast healing but I was worried about the side effects. This stuff can cause permanent thickening of the skin. I tried evening primrose oil capsules but there wasn't any difference in my condition.
I was recently offered steroids to get rid of a rather nasty patch that has been on my leg for eight weeks but I'm loath to use these. There are so many side effects including what is called 'moonface' so I'm not keen to put these into my body unless it is unavoidable. I am still using the hydrocortisone cream (very sparingly) and trying not to get too stressed about anything.
I'm hoping that I will be able to offset the attack myself. Once I learn to manage to the stress I am told by my GP that the attacks will be fewer.
