The excess uric acid can then form into crystals which lodge in the joints, giving rise to inflammation and the very severe pain of gout. Gout is more common in men than in women, although that is not to say that it is unheard of in women. Quite often, women become more prone to attacks after the menopause. Gout is very uncommon in children. There are two types of gout. Primary gout…some sufferers have a genetic predisposition to gout. It may ...more

Premium Review My Experience Of Gout: Terrible Tale of a Tender Trotter (1438 words)
by - written on 24/10/01 (Very useful, 778 readings)
Rating:

Gout is not a laughing matter.. oh no, sirree! When my hubby had his first attack I didn’t laugh. Well, maybe just a little titter behind my hand. I mean…gout…after all, the rich man’s disease. And when I saw his big toe doing a passable impersonation of a belisha beacon, all round, red and shiny, the titter became a snort. Then I realised just how much pain he was in. In fact, I felt his pain. Just a second or two after the TV remote control hit me on the side of the head! “Sorry dear, did that hurt?” “Yes, it did hurt!” “Well, so does my **** foot!”(expletive deleted!) Within the ...  Read the complete review

Medical science says women can't get it before the menopause - believe it? - read this then WHAT IS GOUT? It is very painful, and comically, usually associated with rich living, middle aged men with a taste for the high life; women cannot get it before the menopause, right!!!. It is a metabolic order that causes attacks of arthritis, usually in a single joint, for some reason usually the big toe, but it can also attack various other joints including the knees, ankles, wrist, foot and small joints of the hand. The joint becomes red and swollen and very tender, and can sometimes be confused with cellulitis. It is caused by a high level or uric ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review My Experience Of Gout: Painful, and just too damn young! (763 words)
by - written on 29/03/01 (Very useful, 1343 readings)
Rating:

Okay, most people have heard the old wive's tales about gout. Images of elderly gentlemen who have had too much port and stilton for their own good seem to come to mind to most people when this condition is mentioned. Of course, this is a load of rubbish! As I write this, I am nearing a decade of suffering from gout, and I'm only 25 years old! It started fairly simply. One morning I woke up to find a swollen big toe joint and a lot of pain. Obviously worried about what could be up with me, I called the doctor. After close examination, several possible reasons were looked at. Allergies, infections and other logical conclusions were ruled out, and after ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review My Left Foot (1581 words)
by - written on 10/03/01 (Very useful, 1868 readings)
Rating:

My Left Foot This has got absolutely nothing at all to do with the acclaimed 1989 film of the same name in which Daniel Day Lewis portrays an Irish poets fight against cerebral palsy but a personal experience about a condition known as ‘ Gout ‘ Having passed the half-century mark in the game of life I consider that I have been very fortunate up to now and have enjoyed a reasonably healthy life but I am always consciously aware of the misfortune of others who are not so lucky. I do believe that as long as you have got your health then you should be very grateful and not complain to much as many other unfortunate people are ...  Read the complete review
