I only really recognised the fact that I had hayfever when I was in my late twenties though looking back I seem to remember getting 'summer colds' quite regularly so it has probably been lurking around all my life really.

I can't put my finger on what triggered it off either, maybe it was just a particularly high pollen count that year.

Anyway, it started with the itchy eyes and nose, rapidly followed by almost constant sneezing, often so bad I could hardly draw breath between sneezes, then watery eyes and a runny nose.Yuk! After just a few minutes of this carry on my eyes would become so puffy that I could barely see,my head would ache and I would begin to wheeze. It wasn't just on a sunny day either even when it is cloudy and grey the pollen count can be very high. The only time I really had a break from it is when I lived on the seafront in Wales.(Making a mental note, must move back to the seaside)

Working in this conditon is impossible due to impaired vision and the constant sneezing and trying to sleep is just a waking nightmare.I would close all the windows to keep the pollen out and in doing so virtually suffocate with the heat!

So off to the doctors I went and he diagnosed hayfever. The prescription he gave me was for Clarityn, teeny little white tablets, and I was told just to to take one a day, they really are a little miracle I couldn't believe it they got to work in ten minutes! They are expensive to buy off prescription though seven tablets for £4!

I've tried one or two other remedies since then that you can buy over the counter.

Antifect a herbal remedy which works quite well but you have to take 6 a day and you only get 60 in a tub at a cost of £4.59.

Rhinolast a nasal spray costing £5.99 for 100 sprays and you need 4 sprays a day(1 in each nostril twice a day)It takes acouple of days for this to take effect and there is a real horrible aftertaste.

Be
conase, another nasal spray but this one was cheaper at £3.99 for 100 sprays, same dose as Rhinolast but with no bitter aftertaste so its much better,it also gets to work very quickly. This is what I use at the moment simply because its the cheapest, effective one I've found so far that I can go and buy over the counter without bothering my doctor.

There are lots of remedies for hayfever on the market these days, the ones I've chosen to use don't have a drowsy effect which is a good thing if you have to drive or operate machinery of any kind.

I've also found that washing my hair every night has helped a great deal as quite a bit of pollen can get blown into it during the daytime, this then rubs off on your pillow and gets in your eyes and nose and that is why you get woken in the middle of the night with the beginnings of an attack.

Without a remedy summer would be a really miserable time for me so I'm glad there is something so readily available,I can enjoy the outdoors once again, and open the windows wide!

I never knew about washing your hair until yesterday when I read some opinions on this subject and it does work! I only had to suffer with a wet pillow! Actually the wet pillow was nice and soothing as i was really hot and suffering with the dreaded bug again, mindyou, don't know if it will give me a cold, flu, ruin my bones etc!

That sounds like a good idea - washing your hair and such - never thought about that, thanks for the advice :o)

I completely understand, if one more person asks me if I had a good night on the town last night... Anyway my top tip is wear sunglasses they protect as much pollen getting to your eyes and also stop the natural reaction to touch your eyes which makes them worse.
